Austin Powers - Goldmember
Maybe it was because I was just dumped.  Or maybe I didn't laugh that hard because this movie wasn't as funny as it should have been.  A lot of what made the Austin Powers movies in the past funny was the novelty of the jokes and characters.  This one lacks that because it uses the same once-novel things, with the exception of introducing Goldmember, a rather disappointing character with a part so small, it really didn't deserve its name in the title.  One great thing about this movie though, to get off this negative kick, is the creative things they do with Mini-Me.  They developed his character more, while choosing not to develop Beyonce Knowles' character (which I didn't mind too much).  One last negative thing - they attempted to do another duet with Dr. Evil and Mini-Me but it didn't touch the hilariously endearing "Just the Two of Us."  Go see it, but don't rush.
Vanilla Sky
Yet another one with a misleading trailer. Two words - depressing and confusing. Although there were some nice parts about the fuzzy feeling of love, it didn't make up for the other parts, such as one scene where there was a combination of sex with violence. But most importantly, if you don't like the kind of movie that doesn't explain things until the end, don't see it.
Music
Garbage
April 21, 2002, State Theatre, Detroit
This concert was one of the best I've ever seen, mainly because of the combination of an awesome venue and a kick-ass band.  The State Theatre is small, beautiful, and most importantly, unlike a sports arena, was designed for SOUND!  It was hard not to get excited when Garbage's industrial sound started blasting.  I could recognize every song the second they started playing it.  And that's the way it should be!  Everything sounded just right, including Shirley's voice.  I think they played everything I wanted to hear except for "Queer."  But I left the concert charged, drunk, and a bigger fan of their kind of disappointing latest album, Beautiful Garbage.
Dave Matthews Band
April 23, 2002, The Palace of Auburn Hills, Detroit
This concert was one of the worst I've ever seen, mainly because of a shitty venue and a band that feels they really don't have to play most of their hits or even popular B-sides.  The sound quality was so bad, I couldn't recognize the songs until at least 30 seconds into them.  But most of the time, I didn't recognize the songs at all.  I'll admit I'm not a fan of this band's last two albums, and that might be why.  But I think they could have done a better job balancing all of their work.  The biggest annoyance of the night was when they had an instrumental jam for what seemed like an eternity.  I see that shit as selfish because the band is probably having more fun during that than the audience.  If I wanted to see a band jam like that, I'd see Phish.  Thank God for the hot guy next to me.  Andy made the 50 dollar ticket worth it, especially because of the smooching during "The Space Between."  Heehee, come on, I was drunk.
