Frank Miller managed to receive great acclaim, for his story and take on the origin of Batman and the rise of James Gordon to his post of commissioner of police. While this story is still virtually cannon for both these characters, Miller�s take on me was received with a slight backlash. Gritty and sombre, Year One deals with corrupt police officers rough pimps and underage prostitutes.
No longer am I the happy go lucky former air hostess turned cat burglar I'm now a cropped hair, tough talking, man hating possibly lesbian whip wielding dominatrix. I live in a run down apartment along with young a daughter/adoptive sister young girl called Holly. Both of us work for a horrible, ugly foul-mouthed pimp called Stan.
Despite the controversy about Millers take on me, a more detailed, more sombre story was released in the first Catwoman comic. Later released in a graphic novel titled: Her Sisters Keeper�s.
The first time you see the infamous catsuit it�s actually a dominatrix outfit I wear for a client. You would have thought I would have had the worse thrown at my by just by being in that �profession�, but cruel fate had my pimp, Stan, �teach me a lesson.� While I recuperated, I planned my revenge. I adapted the aforementioned dominatrix outfit to resemble a cat and quite the business after teaching Stan a lesson of his own.
Unfortunately I got saw none other than by a nun, Sister Magdalene, my own sister Maggie. She ends up going to the police and informing them about a �Catwoman� who was in the alley the other night. The idiot doesn�t realise what she�s doing. Maggie ends up finding Holly, who informs me bout a nun asking questions. By this time I've spent some, all, of Holly and mine money a cat costume, equipped with claws, whiskers and a tail.
I go to visit Maggie and that pervert Stan who discovers, that Maggie�s my sister, and kidnaps her follows me. Of course this is the trigger to the creation of the avenging non-angel Catwoman of this story.
I find out about Maggie from a police officer whose on the case of the �Catwoman�. He doesn�t tend to believe that I don�t know bout Maggie, which I have to hide from him, as well as my stolen loot. Of course I go after Stan, claws out and everything.
I manage to rescue, well Batman does, Maggie and Stan bites the dust. I didn�t kill Stan. Batman states he �Tripped on his shoelace�. I manage to escape being arrested and Batman insures Maggie gets to safety.
Racked by guilt I later return to Maggie in the hope she can help me deal with the Catwoman. Although fate intervenes and a cop, called �Strunk� attacks Holly. Since the police ignores me, I as Catwoman goes after him. Knowing that doing so seals Catwoman and me together forever � even Maggie wont help me after that. I run into Batman and have our first major fight, me drawing first blood. This seals my fate as one of his major foes. And I'm forced to retire from the life of Selina.
Holly remains at the convent under the watchful eye of my sister and Batman awaits my next appearance.
