Hello..i'm Moo. Got the nick from the internet. Anyway, i'm now making canes. I recently became disabled to a degree that a cane or walking stick is a partner during the day. "Old hippies never die...they just get a stick"!

I did this website myself as you can probably tell. I will be adding pages and more canes as time goes by. A return to school at middle age introduced me to web and graphics work. I diddled in typesetting and desktop publishing basically, but a few graphics/web interests sprang up.

I recently retired from truck driving and am an at home person now. I have always done a lot of fiddling with things with my hands, so the knot work is a good thing to keep me off the streets and out of trouble...which my wife thinks is a good thing!

I was a commercial fisherman in the Florida Keys for many years and had a book called the Ashley Book of Knots. This book is amazing! I would take old net twine and do things with knots. As the years went by I kept the book, but didn't tie knots for many years. I was sitting home one day and looked at my knob top walking stick. A knot covering thought sprang to mind. The rest of my canes have evolved from wanting to make them. I don't know a whole lot on woodworking, but I am learning fast! The fastest thing I learned was how hard Oak is! My favorite piece of wood to start from is an oak stair spindel. They are already partially round, and I just finish up by taking off the excess to complete the making of a shaft.

I will experiment with other woods in the future, but blanks such as Cherry or Maple are a bit pricey. Right now I try to recycle items I can readily find. I did one from a broken shovel handle that was Ash and if I look I may find a Hickory handle on something I can use. Seeing as there are yard sales and such everywhere these days, I may find a few other items.

Anyway, enough about Moo. I need to get this thing down and start offering canes for sale so people can get as much enjoyment from using them as I do in making them. Drop me a line if you want to contribute an idea or suggestion for canes or knots. Thank you for visiting my site.
