Mangalore is known for its flora and fauna. You can get  fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers through out the year. The main occupation of Mangaloreans is agriculture, every house grows its own fruits and vegetables. The surplus is sold into the market, so you can get fresh vegetables and fruits any time.

Among the  typical Mangalore vegetables.............Spinach (basale), Green Brinjal (gulla), Garkins (manoli), Ladies finger (bende), Red Cucumber (thauthe), Green Leafy Vegetables (padpe), Bread fruit (jeegujje) are very common in every house. These vegetables are usually grown in every house in the village. Usually these vegetables are cooked with coconut gravy for boiled rice. Some times it is cooked with the combination of 2 or more vegetables, jack fruit seeds and  at times with fish combination like prawns, dry fish etc.

Among the  Mangalorefruits...........usually Mangoes (kukku), Jack fruit (gujje), Guavas (perale), Cashew fruit (gonku), Blue Berry (nerale), Jambu  are found in common. Mangalore is rich in cashew crop. This grows in the month of March till 2 months. Children love to eat the fruit. The seeds are sent to the factory to remove the outer shell, later known as cashew nuts. The juice of the fruit is also useful for medical purpose and also to make liquor Fenny.
 

Mangalore Mallige is a famous flower world wide. The fragrance of the flower is breathtaking. Any auspicious function is incomplete without the flower. This flower blooms after the first rain, just before the rainy season. During the season this flower (25 cms) is sold for Rs 10/- to 20/- . As the demand increases in the city due to festivals or weddings the same flower (25 cms) is sold for Rs 200/-upto 500/-.
Mangalorean ladies love this flower from years. It is usually offered to the temples to decorate the idols.
