A Brief History of Tanks
The earliest known design of a tank was created by Leonardo da Vinci. It had wooden armor and was driven by a man turning a crank. A gunner operated a cannon from the top. This vehicle was never built. During WWI, battles were fought from trenches and it was extremely difficult to break through enemy lines. The British designed an armored vehicle to do this task. They kept the project so secret that the people working on it thought they were building a water container, hence the name "tank". This vehicle was successful in its job. Little did anyone know at the time that tanks would play a major role in WWII... |
