| The M26 Pershing snuck into the war at the very end and is more of a post war tank than a WWII tank. I included it because it looks cool and is extremely important in the development of American tanks. At the time there was controversy over whether or not the tank should be built. The army did not want a vehicle like this but they did want the 90mm gun and did not have another vehicle that it could be mounted on. The desision was made to produce the tank and it was designated the M26 Heavy Tank "Pershing" after General John J. Pershing. In 1946 it was re-designated the M46 Medium Tank "Patton", and saw extensive action in Korea with many armies. The biggest importance of the M26 was that it was the beginning of the line of tank designs that became the M60 which is considered the most successful American tank ever. |
