| The M24 Chaffee was undisputedly the most advanced light tank of the war. It replaced the M5 in 1944. It was superior to its predecsessor in ever aspect. The Chaffee's 75 mm main gun was almost as powerful as that of the M4 Sherman. Well armed, well armoured and fast were the advantages of the Chaffee over its competitors. By the end of the war in Europe, over 4000 M24 Chaffees had been produced. The M24 borrowed parts from the M5 and the M18 Hellcat tank destroyer to save money. The M24 was very influentual in later tank designs. Today a few countries still use the M24. |
