Project 2:15 Ogada Children’s Orphanage

Name / Location of the Project

Ogada Children’s Home is located in Nyanza Province, Kisumu District, Nyahera Division, on the Western highlands of Kenya along the Kisumu – Kakamega Road. It is a four-hour journey of about 340km from the Nairobi City and an additional 10km to Kiboswa from the Kisumu bus terminal.


Project Description

It is an orphanage set up to take care of orphans from the community most of whom their parents have died of HIV/AIDS and/or related diseases.


Type of Work / Job

  • The orphanage needs a social worker and nursing/ general health personnel.
  • Skills Requirement
  • One with social work and/or agricultural skills and / or experience.
  • Basic knowledge and/or experience in nursing or general health


    Duration

    3-6 Months for Mid-Term volunteers and over 6 months for Long-Term volunteers, though preference is given to (1) one year for a solid performance assessment.

    Basic Facts

    Upon arrival to Kenya, an orientation session / preparation seminar will be offered. Transport to and from the project, food and accommodation arrangements will be taken care of by KVDA. Note: The area is situated only a few kilometers from the equator. Most of the people in the area practice mixed farming {livestock keeping and crop farming}.


    Climatic Conditions are as follows: -

    Environment - Mostly green throughout the year with an annual average rainfall of over 1500mm.
    Temperatures range from 24 - 26 degrees Centigrade though there are variations depending on the season. Mornings may be cold most of the time.
    The area is about 1157m above the sea level.


    Other facts:

    The nearest hospital a government health institution {The Nyahera District Hospital} in Nyahera. There is also a private clinic in Kiboswa, which is a distance of three and a half kilometers away from the project site.
    Communication services are diverse, reliable and cheaper in Kisumu City.


    Number of Volunteers Required

    A maximum of {5} five from January to December at any open time. Volunteers must start serving in the project at the given time either on the beginning or middle of the month.
