Project situated along the Kibwezi-Kitui road. Aprox 20km off the Nairobi -Mombasa highway .It is a. 3 hours Journey from Nairobi city. It is in Eastern Province, Makueni District, and Kibwezi Division. Kisayani Market. The project is 2 kilometres west of the Kisayani Market..


Project Description

It is a women and children empowerment centre consisting of 98 members both young and old women.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Enhancement of capacity building within the group through the following activities:
  • Food Security Programme
  • Collective child-care initiative.
  • Empowerment thro’ info sharing
  • Educational enhancement thro orphan support
  • Income Generating Activities through action-oriented creation and information sharing.
  • Rehabilitation of orphans esp. with HIV/AIDS & other special needy cases
  • Water harvesting
  • Community health scheme, work esp. on women/children related issues (HIV/AIDS)
  • Technological enhancement skills esp. to the talented but uneducated single mothers and school dropouts

    SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Social work skills
  • Recreative skills more especially creative learning.
  • Environmental and Agricultural skills
  • Medical skills
  • Child care
  • Gender expertise.


    Duration

    0-3 Months, 0-6 months for mid term volunteers and over 6 months for long term volunteers.


    CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

    Kisayani is characterized with semi arid kind of climatic with the area receiving rains after every two years less than 1000mm per year.. Near River YUU that is generally polluted by the sisal factory that deposits its effluent in the river has a different kind of weather pattern as rains follows the meander of the river.
    Generally the area is hot and dry during the day with cold chill nights at times especially during the cold months of June and July.
    Temperatures ranges from 26 to 30 degrees centigrade.
    The vegetation is dry with scattered shrubs and short thorny tree


    Basic Facts

  • The area in a branch of University of Nairobi department of ranching management in collaboration with Israel Government. There is Horticulture farming which is taking place. Fruits are in plenty. Despite the fact that is a semi arid area.
  • Shopping possibilities are in Kibwezi town where one can have variety do shopping.
  • Piped water at a central place
    No electricity
  • Accommodation-Private stay
  • Internet services are available but to distant town {Mtitu Adei and Makindu}
  • Telephone services are available in Kibwezi town a 20 minutes drive
  • Banking services are also available
  • Nearest bus connection within the market {Kisayani}
  • Health facilities -Private hospitals and clinics are within the town. The government hospital {Kibwezi rural health center} I.
  • Major hospitals are in Makindu- sud- district hospital, -{40 minutes drive-Voi district hospital 1 hours drive}. Incase of special emergency Nairobi is the next Hospital



    Number of Volunteers Required

    A maximum of three {3} volunteers at any given time. Volunteers must start serving in the project at the given time either on the beginning or middle of the month.
