Project 2:01 Mlondo primary school.


Name / location of the project
Mlondo primary school is located in coast province, Taita/ Taveta district on the sagalla hills. it is a five-hour journey of 338km from Nairobi to voi town and an additional 20km from voi town to Mlondo primary school. from voi town to mombasa city it is a maximum two-hour journey of 156km.


Project description
it is a learning institution consisting of eight (8) classrooms and a kindergarten, with 165 pupils at the ratio of 81 girls to 84 boys.

Type of work / job
The institution needs a teacher, to teach English and introduce a foreign language; and coordinate some of the various school clubs like scouting, wildlife and 4k clubs and establish a tree nursery.


Skills requirement
  • One with teaching skills and / or experience.
  • Knowledge of tree nursery establishment.
  • Basic knowledge of scouting, wildlife (optional)

    Note: in the primary school teaching no specialization is required/needed.


    Duration

    3-6 months for mid-term volunteers and over 6 months for long-term volunteers, though preference is given to (1) one year for a solid performance assessment.

    upon arrival to Kenya, an orientation session / preparation seminar will be offered Transport to and from the project, food and accommodation arrangements will be taken care of by KVDA.


    Climatic conditions are as follows: -

    Environment - green bushy area with trees, cool, with an annual average rainfall of about 1000mm.
    The coldest months include June, July and partly august.
    Temperatures range from 26 - 30 degrees centigrade though there are variations depending on the season.
    Altitude is about 1500m above the sea level.

  • There is a hospital adjacent to the school.
  • A transport (minibus) connection point - less than 500 meters away
  • A village trading center - 500 meters away
  • For a wide variety of shopping possibilities, one has to travel 18km to voi town, a principal town on the Nairobi - Mombasa highway.
  • Postal services are available 500 meters away.
  • Telephone services are near the health facility, which is adjacent to the school; with mobile phones reception is at strategic point s at high grounds.
  • Internet services are 18 kms away {voi town} where one can browse with the purchase of 100 Kshs. surf card at posta building.
  • Number of volunteers required

    a maximum of {3} three from January to mid-November at any open time. Volunteers must start serving in the project at the given time either in January for the 1st term, may for the 2nd term or September for the 3rd term of the school’s running schedule.

    Schools normally break for a three- to four- week holiday during the months of April, august and December; but also in the months of April and august, holiday tuition/remedial classes do take place.
