Project 2:05 Karago primary school&Kathera Self Help Group..

Name/ location of the project


Kara go primary school is located in eastern province, embu district, kieni division, kieni south location a distance of 250km from the Nairobi city to Embu town. From the makutano junction, it is about 22km to Kara go primary school. it is a journey of about 3 ½ hours.


Project description

it is a learning institution for primary school pupils and nursery children comprising of 210 pupils at the ratio of 109 to 101 girls. the institution consists of 8 classes with nine (9) teaching staff, 6 males and 3 females and a youth empowerment group to assist the youth within the kieni community. .


Duties and responsibilities

Teaching mathematics, art subjects, English, and science.
Introduction of a foreign language
Organization, coordination and participation in extra-curricular activities like athletics, football, etc
Coordination of clubs in the school like scouting, athletics, drama, music, etc
Skills requirement
Teaching skills and / or experience.
ability and willingness to organize, coordinate and participate in extra-curricular activities and club affairs


Duration

0- 3-months, 0-6 months for mid-term volunteers and over 6-12 months for long-term volunteers, though preference is given to (1) one year for a solid performance assessment.


Basic facts

Upon arrival to Kenya, an orientation session / preparation seminar will be offered. Transport to and from the project, food and accommodation arrangements will be taken care of by KVDA.


Climatic conditions are as follows: -

Environment - green and bushy with many trees. it is a hilly region.
The coldest months include June, July and partly august.
Temperatures range from 25 - 27 degrees centigrade though there are variations depending on the season. {at times it can be below 20 degrees centigrade during the cold season}. but it is generally warm.
the altitude is over 1800m above the sea level.

There is a health facility near - 2km away
A village trading center - 2km away
For a wide variety of shopping possibilities, one has to travel 8km to Runyenjes town or Embu town.
The biggest hospital is in embu town - 8km away
Mount Kenya is about 70km away from the project, which is about a 1-hour drive.
Kirimiri forest /hills with mokeys
Gitwa falls and caves
Kirimiri water falls.

Number of volunteers required

a maximum of {3} three from January to mid-November at any open time. Volunteers must start serving in the project at the given time either in January for the 1st term, may for the 2nd term or September for the 3rd term of the school’s running schedule.
Schools normally break for a three- to four- week holiday during the months of April, august and December; but also in the months of April and august, holiday tuition/remedial classes do take place.
