Jora women &children empowerment programme.

Name / location of the project
Jora women & children empowerment is located in the coast province of Kenya, Taita/ Taveta district .it is situated in kasigau location on a rough terrain 75 kms from voi town adjacent to the famous foot of kasigau hills {5383 fts.above the sea level}. it is a five-hour journey of 338km from Nairobi to Voi town. From voi town to Mombasa city it is a maximum two-hour journey of 156km.

Project description
It is a women group determined to overcome the socio-economic challenges comprising of various activities group for empowerment {iga} income generating activities and learning institution consisting of eight (8) classrooms comprising of less than pupils (both boys and girls) with an average of 16 pupils per class.

Type of work / job

  • Not restricted to any particular subject (s) but to be fully in- cooperated into the school system.
  • Introduction of a foreign language
  • Participation in extra - curricular activities like drama, wildlife, 4k and music clubs
  • Civil education to the women on socio-economic rights.
  • Income generating activities ideas
  • Home visits
  • Visits to self help projects within the area.
  • Learn and teach, hold discussions on the burning issues and build an environment for cross cultural exchange and peace building.

    Skills requirement
  • One with teaching skills and / or experience.
  • Ability and willingness to participate in extra curriculum activities
  • Social work skills.
  • Recreative Skills

    Duration 3 -6 months for mid-term volunteers and over 6 months for long-term volunteers, though preference is given to (1) one year for a solid performance assessment.


    Basic facts
  • Upon arrival to Kenya, an orientation session / preparation seminar will be offered. Transport to and from the project, food and accommodation arrangements will be taken care of by KVDA.
  • Climatic conditions are as follows: -
  • Environment - green bushy area with trees, cool, with an annual average rainfall of about 1000mm.
  • The coldest months include June, July and partly august.
  • Temperatures range from 26 - 30 degrees centigrade though there are variations depending on the season.
  • the famous kasigau hills have gashing natural waters, which is hygienically safe for human consumption.
  • No electricity.

    Other facts:
  • There is a hospital 1km away
  • A transport (minibus) connection point just besides the women group building at the market center.
  • A village-trading center within the women group building.
  • The other big market center is 1km away
  • For a wide variety of shopping possibilities, one has to travel 50kms away to Voi town, a principal town on the Nairobi - Mombasa highway.
  • The area is rich in natural resources {minerals-gem stones and wild life-Tsavo East and West National park.
  • Postal and telephone services are 1 km away.
  • Internet services are 50 kms away at voi town where one can browse with the purchase of 100 Kshs. Surf- card



    Number of volunteers required

    A maximum of {3} three Volunteers from January to mid-November at any open time. Volunteers must start serving in the project at the given time either in January for the 1st term, may for the 2nd term or September for the 3rd term of the school’s running schedule {Working in School}
    Volunteers interested in working with Women group can stay for January-December.

    The project is unique as it offers from social work to teaching..

    For specific area of specialization -working with the women group any time of the year is applicable.
    Schools normally break for a three- to four- week holiday during the months of April, August and December; but also in the months of April and August, holiday tuition/remedial classes do take place.
