Palm OS

Palm OS is an OS constructed and licensed by PalmSource, Inc. (6) specifically for PDAs. It is designed to provide similar functions to those provided by Stand-alone OS. Palm OS is usually present as a suite of various applications that vary according to the licensee’s requirements. The following are a few of the major applications available in most of the Palm OS suites:

Address Book or Contacts

This application allows the organization of contact information including names, numbers, and emails. The names are arranged in last name, first name order. Five slots are available for the latter, providing a change for specifications, either as work, home, mobile and others.

      Blazer

This is a web browser that allows internet access.

Expense

An application that facilitates the tracking of current expenses, although it does not calculate the expenses, it allows the input of the expenses. The PDA is then attached to a host computer to which the information is transferred and calculated on a worksheet.

HotSync

Is an application that allows simultaneous exchange of information between the PDA and the desktop computer. Primarily, it works as a medium used to install new applications into the PDA, as well as a transfer mechanism for photos, music and other media.

Memo Pad

As given by the name, this application holds notes up to 4,000 characters. These characters are limited to alphabet, to form text. Hence, all input must be in Graffiti, which is a handwriting recognition software based on neography, a set of alphabet or language created by a user or a group. Each letter or symbol is assigned a handwritten equivalent; subsequently, the handwritten input is then converted to its equivalent. When the neography panel is first set, letters A, F, K and T are drawn without their defining stroke. This modification, the exclusion of the defining stroke, is set to eliminate the complexities that arise as a result of the incapability of the user to see what they are manually writing, because the letters directly converted to ‘typed’ letters instead.

Tasks

A to do list is provided as a reminder panel. Characteristics provided by the To Do List are to set the tasks and arranging them according to priority, category, or due date.

Security

This application allows the delegation of passwords to certain records, by which a record can be visible or hidden. It also allows the user to set an automatic lock down time, at which the computer automatically is set to stand-by, hibernate or any other specification set by the user.
