Welcome to Luigi's Language advice
Prepare yourself for the course!
bookclmr I took 8 different courses at different schools. Four times I took the starter level course. Each time I noticed, that there were people who knew something already. They had studied earlier, they lived abroad etc. There were of course others who joined the course without any previous study. They always had a hard time feeling stupid and thinking that other people were more talented. Usually they left the course after a few short weeks. So do not take even a starter course without preparation if yo don't want to waste your time and money. I suggest to read and translate at least one or better two course books before you join a course. Do not bother about pronunciation you will learn that at the course. Don't be disappointed if you can't speak after a few months. It is natural. First you have to understand then when you have learned enough words you will be able to speak. It's very difficult to speak when you do not even understand things. Just make sure, you can read and understand what you read.

In your preparation period do not even bother to do the exercises. It is very hard and time consuming when you don't even understand the words. Just read the questions, understand them and go on. It can be even dangerous to do exercise when you don't have anybody to control. You will remember everything you write,
regardless if it is correct or not.

Understand the rules, they are not poems.
I read the rules and definitions carefully and made sure I understood the spirit of them. I read as many times as necessary to understand, but I did not learn the words of the rule. They are usually too scientific and difficult to learn and understand. I saw many people repeating rules like poems, but they could not use them because they were focusing on the words and not on the meaning. Just think, how many rules you need for one sentence. Probably more than the number of words in it. You can not repeat all those rules before you say something. Just read enough and everything will come naturally. Think of the 6 years old children. They can speak quite well before they learn the rules.
