| Choose a book with a lot of text! | |||||||||

If you wish to learn on your own you better get books with more text than pictures, with explanations in your own language and no glossy paper. Those with many pictures and little text may be useful to work in the course, teachers love them nowadays, but I never opened them at home. It is too boring to read the same few sentences at home too. So I recommend you to buy another book for your home study, any book other than the one you use at the course and hate already. When you finished your first course book, you may want to find something more interesting. I recommend children's tales, they are quite easy to read once you learned the names of all the animals. Then I found some books in the library of British Council, called "Easy readers" books. They are specially designed for those who learn English as a foreign language. They are books you would read anyway, but they are simplified to use only the 500-2500 most commonly used English words. There are 5 different levels. Click on the link bellow to see a list of such books. Please note: this will take you to the Library of British Council, Budapest. Select a book from the list, click on the title and you will see the details of publishers and also the ISBN number. With that information, you can find the book in your local library, or in a bookstore or you can order online. Click to see the list Another good resource: Penguin Readers Believe me, it is a great experience to be able to read a book after a few months of study. When you read such a book, you will even forget that you are learning. They will give a boom to your progress. It's a pity that there are no such books in other languages. I have also found a dictionary, called "Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English" It also uses the 2500 most common words in the explanations. Those words are listed in 6 pages at the end of the dictionary. I spent hours after hours browsing it, there are thousands of useful example sentences. Just think of the other dictionaries, when you look up a word, you find 3 more words you don't know. Terrible. Click here to continue |
