Theories:
Here are some theories on Kurapika and Neon...what happened when we weren't
looking and some fan assumptions. Some info here can also be found in
the Evidences section. If you'd like to submit your own snippets, go to
the submissions section.
"Destined"
It is their destiny to meet. When Senrithsu and Kurapika first met,
she felt something weird about him and when they saw each other again
in the Nostrad Mansion, she told him that it was Kurapika's destiny
that he work there (and destiny that he work for Neon). In a way, it
could explain why they sort of had a strange connection even before
they met. They were, unknowingly, eager to meet each other. Kurapika
was curious as to how his boss looked like. Neon was excited to see
her new batch of bodyguards.
Daltzorne was the chief bodyguard and the one assigned to protect Neon
at all times. He died an unexpected death and was replaced by Kurapika,
who in turn, takes over all his duties including Neon's protection.
Neon's most favorite treasure to date are the scarlet eyes of the Kuruta
clan. Little does she know she has a Kuruta right under her roof!
"Annoyed...NOT!"
Most anti-K+N and other non-supporters would claim that Kurapika is
annoyed with Neon's childish antics. Here's something to disprove that.
We all know of Kurapika's sudden personality change in the OVA series.
He has turned morbid, bitter and angry. His emotions easily get the
best of him. When he and Senrithsu first met on the train, he complained
on how Senrithsu wouldn't stop talking and that he couldn't concentrate
on his reading. Another time was when Senrithsu commented on the harmony
of Kurapika's heartbeats (he was at peace by a brook then) and he frankly
said "I hate people who keep on babbling about nonsense."
If he really is annoyed with Neon, he would have told her straight out
how he felt. I know you're gonna say, "That's 'coz she's he's boss
and his source of income!" Well then, how about the times he shouted
at Right Nostrad for making the wrong decisions and endangering Neon's
life? Remember that Right's his main employer. He could've lost his
job! And how about when he was training with his nen teacher? Kurapika
kept saying bad things to his sensei and kept disrespecting him (and
the development of a nen ability is far more valuable than money).
"In the Plane"
Kurapika, along with Neon and the other bodyguards headed for York Shin
on a plane (in my opinion, it's a Nostrad private jet). When they landed,
everyone else came out the plane immediately but it takes a while before
Kurapica and Neon made their way out the plane. What took them so long?
It is assumed that in this short while, they got into a conversation
and got to know each other a little better. This could explain why Kurapika
knows Neon more than her father does in the later part of the story.
After that, Kurapika is seen secretly watching Neon, who was cheerfully
caressing her big, furry pet dog. What made her cheerful? It could be
that she found a new friend (not the dog!) in Kurapika. If Kurapika
only thinks of Neon as a source of income, then, staring at her silently
like that wouldn't be a practical thing to do now, would it?
"Eerie Comfort"
It seemes weird that of all the new bodyguards, Neon has quickly become
at ease with Kurapika. And what I mean by that, is she smiles at him,
she can have an outburst right in front of him and well...she never
yells at him...not like she did with Daltzorne and the other bodyguards.
In one episode, Kurapika told Neon her father would be arriving and
she burst out in glorious happiness but then Kurapika told her to stay
put 'til then. She simply put on a sad face and mumbled sadly to herself
but nonetheless, she obeyed. If it had been Daltzorne...well,...you
know.
"Son-in-law???"
This theory will (sort of) showcase the what-if scenario of Kurapika
being Right's son-in-law. First off is that Kurapika gently requested
that Neon introduce him to her father (that cell phone conversation
thing) because it wouldn't be right and she eagerly did so. That's one
good point for a son-in-law to be. You must always be courteous with
your in-laws ^_^
Next, during Right and Kurapika's first conversation, it seems Right
had very quickly, trusted Kurapika with his daughter's welfare (a sign
of acceptance?). He even asked what action Kurapika would recommend,
although Right did put up an arguement but still, Kurapika made it clear
that he'd do anything to keep Neon from harm, saying that his top priority
is her safety. That's a quality of good husbands: thinking of their
wives' safety. Hehehe....flame up, non-fans 'coz I know this theory
can get into some nerves.
Cell Phone Communication
Haven't you noticed how Kurapika and Neon are seen using cell phones
more often than most characters? This may symbolize that they do communicate
with each other (perhaps secretly). Besides, Neon lent her cell phone
to Kurapika. This may also signify that she has given him her number.
Hihihihi!
"Tainted with Blood"
After killing Ubogin, Kurapika went back to the hotel, all bloodied
up (90% of it is from Ubogin). Senrithsu and the others asked if he
was alright but he wouldn't say a word and continued walking along the
hallway towards his room. He walked past Neon's room, where she was
playing cards with her maids. She looked up and caught a glimpse of
Kurapika. After this, only the maids are seen playing cards. Where'd
Neon go off to? It is assumed that she went to Kurapika and perhaps
confronted him...maybe even comforted him in secret (the previous theories
here have suggested that Neon and Kurapika are secret friends). He needed
someone to lean on at that moment anyway. This is what made me do the
fanart I used for this layout's top image ^_^
"Disguises"
Here's something Neon and Kurapika did in common: they both wore disguises!!!
Kurapika disguised himself against the Genei Ryodan's twice: once as
a long haired, french like boy and the second, a female clerk. Neon
did it once, wearing a black wig and changing her style of clothing
(from conservative to sexy). Coincidence? This is pretty rare in anime
(in my opinion at least). Most disguises (don't include superheroes
like sailormoon and stuff. I mean disguises to fool people and escape
like K+N did) in anime are planned by two or more people or if it's
only one person, no one else does it but that one person. It is never
coincidental. It is possible, that Kurapika had told Neon about how
he disguised himself and that she decided to take the idea for herself!
If it's a coincidence, then, it's a sign that they're destined together!
(hahaha flamers!)
"Delirious with Fever"
We know Kurapika got sick. He had this strange fever caused by "fatigue
and illness" as Senrithsu put it. Why did he get sick? Is it because
he was working too hard to catch the Genei Ryodan? Yes, that's one of
the reasons. But I believe there's more.
Kurapika began a very furious search for Kuroro and the other Genei
Ryodan right after Neon fainted and was sent to the hospital. The fact
that he worked harder raises my eyebrows. And this also leads me to
believe that he hadn't been eating, nor sleeping well for the days after
Neon's misfortune. Seeing Neon in that condition I believe, affected
him so much that he didn't care about his health and the fact that he
asked how and where Neon was immediately after waking up confirms this.
"Knowing Me, Knowing You"
Most theories here have pointed out to the fact that Neon and Kurapika
are secret friends. Here's another thing to confirm this.
Kurapika knew more about Neon than any other bodyguard. He even knows
more about her than her own father! When the news of Neon's escape came
to Right and Kurapika, Kurapika immediately said that Neon was at the
auction. It is shown that Right was clearly surprised at what Kurapika
said.
Now for the chain. Kurapika located Neon using his embodying chain.
This could signify that he well...sort of knows what her nen is like,
in essence, signifying that they are quite close to each other.
Last, but certainly not the least, was when Kurapika awoke from his
fever and asked where and how Neon was. Senrithsu lied to him and said
Neon simply bought auction items from the internet. Kurapika then said:
"I don't believe you. She(Neon) likes the excitement in the auction
room. I can't believe she'd be content with an auction over the net."
And yes, Kurapika knew Senrithsu lied. Senrithsu told him the truth
that Neon was affected by Elisa's emotional breakdown (after Scuwala
died) and so she decided to go home. This put Kurapika at ease. This
also proves that there's more to Neon than just a whiney girl. Kurapika,
in a way, knew Neon had a sensitive side and the only way he could've
known that is if they were indeed secret friends.
"Beyond the Call of Duty"
Kurapika's protective of Neon. There's no question about that. Most people would assume (esp. non-fans) that it's
'coz it's part of Kurapika's job. I think otherwise. It's more than just for his job. He really does seem to care about her.
Let's start with the first cell phone conversation of Right and Kurapika.
Kurapika had recommended to take Neon to safety but Right said otherwise,
wanting Neon's desires to come first. Kurapika opposed, saying his top
priority was Neon's safety. If indeed, Kurapika was doing everything
he is for the sake of duty, he would've obeyed Right since he's the
big boss...but he didn't. How many new employees would shout at their
bosses for making the wrong decisions? I mean, that was Kurapika's first
day of being the leader and he risked losing his job...for what? Neon's
safety! I'm glad Right didn't fire him. That didn't happen just once.
As I recall, it happened twice...thrice even, that Kurapika opposed
Right's decisions for Neon.
Perhaps the ultimate proof to this was when Kurapika was sick in bed.
It is practical to think that he forget his job even for a tiny while
(like a sick leave) in order to get better...but he was still thinking
of Neon. Immediately after waking up, Kurapika asked how and where Neon
was. And to think...the night before, a lot of things had happened...but
still, he managed to think and ask, of all things, about Neon!
Three to four days later, he still wasn't well and yet, he began packing
his things so that he may return to the Nostrad Mansion (where Neon
was). Ordinary employees who are sick often don't return to work until
after they are fully recovered (some even extend their leave). And Kurapika?
He was still sick, for crying out loud! Senrithsu and the others protested
to his eagerness to go back to work, but he stubbornly continued on.
He even declined Gon's request to teach him some nen tricks. "I
can't, because I have things to take care of." So there!!!
"Opposites Attract"
Opposites attract and that's a fact. Not only a scientific fact, but
it's true in almost every occassion. This type of attraction is pretty
popular in anime. Examples are Vegeta and Bulma (Dragonball), Jun and
Kazuya (Tekken), Ranma and Akane (Ranma 1/2), Anna and Yoh (Shaman King),
and even Yusuke and Keiko from Yoshihiro Togashi's previous masterpiece,
Yu Yu Hakusho! Now, back to Hunter X Hunter. Kurapika and Neon's personalities
are as different as night is from day. Kurapika's too sad and morbid.
Neon's too happy and cheerful. If there's one thing they have in common
is that they're both 'imbalanced'. Kurapika needs a bit of sunshine
in his life while Neon...let's face it. She does need her bubble to
be burst. Both need each other to be 'balanced' if you get my drift.
"The Sound of Music?!?"
Here's
one really weird info. I dunno if Yoshihiro likes "The Sound of Music",
but when I rented a copy and watched it (for the millionth time. I love
that movie!), it reminded me so much of some scenes from the HunterXHunter
Ova series. Too much actually. Here's what I mean:
[+] Kurapika, in a way, is similar to Maria. Both are blondes for one.
Both came to their respective mansions to do their jobs. Both were sent
to take care of their employer's child/ren. Both were shocked to see
how young their "boss"/es are.
[+] The gates of both mansions (Von Trapp and Nostrad) look eerily similar.
[+] Kurapika stopped at the gate and stared at the mansion before letting
himself in, just like Maria did in the movie.
[+] Both of them were employed to by an influential family.
[+] Strangely enough, however, Kurapika's personality is more of Capt.
Georg Von Trapp and Maria's personality is more like Neon's (if you
don't know, in the movie, Capt. Von Trapp ended up falling in love and
marrying Maria). Maria was destined to her "boss", Capt. Von Trapp.
Could Kurapika be destined with his "boss", Neon Nostrad?
