| The Clone Wars proved to have a terrible effect on the galaxy, and made a deep, dark impression on Anakin himself. He was no longer the kind, tidy boy from Tatooine: he had become a grizzled, dishevelled war- hero. A scar cut into his face, his unkempt hair fell down to his shoulders and he bore a dark grudge for Count Dooku, instigator of the Wars. Three years of war ended when Dooku was killed, and the remnants of his Confederacy were rounded up or destroyed. However, it was not the end of the Republic's troubles. The war had weakened it, leaving it ripe for attack. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine made good use of his advantage as the man who had led the Republic to victory: he destroyed the government. Palpatine instigated a New Order and declared himself Emperor. The Jedi became enemies of the Empire, and the survivors were forced to flee. Yet there was a more personal battle being waged. Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi had been good friends during the Clone Wars, but soon afterwards they began drifting further apart. Finally, Anakin went over the edge and attacked his mentor. A violent duel ensued against the backdrop of a deadly lava lake. Both Jedi were weary, but each held their own in battle. Suddenly, Obi-Wan gained the upper hand, and Anakin fell. He was burned badly by the lava, and Obi-Wan fled, leaving him for dead. Yet Anakin did not die. The dark hatred that had been growing within him took over, and sustained him. Anakin joined Emperor Palpatine and became a Dark Lord of the Sith. His wounds were treated, but he was forced to wear a black armoured suit to breathe. In that dark time, Anakin Skywalker was crushed. Darth Vader rose in his place. |
