| Anakin was instantly attracted to one of the customers who had entered Watto's shop. He had a strange feeling about her, and for some reason knew he would one day marry her. He told the girl - Padm� - of his life as a slave and a pilot, and began talking about podracing. However, Padm�'s companion returned from the junk yard after failing to negotiate a deal with Watto. Padm� left the shop, and Anakin returned to his work. He had another encounter with them once he had finished, when their alien friend Jar Jar had gt himself into trouble with Sebulba. Anakin diffused the situation and walked with them through the streets of Mos Espa. Anakin generously brought his new friends something to eat, when his friend Jira commented that a sandstorm was approaching...and when Anakin saw Padm�'s companion had a lightsaber hidden under his poncho. Anakin offered shelter at his hovel, and was eager to show Padme his droid as Qui-Gon Jinn introduced himself to Shmi. Over dinner, which Qui-Gon provided, Anakin brought up the subject of Qui-Gon's lightsaber. He learned that the man was indeed a Jedi, and needed a new hyperdrive to reach Coruscant. Anakin knew how he could help them, but Shmi was reluctant to agree: Anakin could compete in the Boonta Eve podrace to win money for the hyperdrive, but Shmi didn't want him to race again after the accident with Sebulba in the last. Eventually she agreed, knowing there was no other way to help Anakin's new friends, and Qui-Gon secured the deal with Watto. Unbeknownst to Anakin, he also made another bet with Watto...to release Anakin if the boy won the race. Anakin, with the help of his droid C-3PO, and his new aquaintance R2-D2, set about polishing up his racer for the Boonta Eve Classic. It worked, and Anakin got some much needed rest before the race. Finally, the big day arrived, and Anakin was confidant he would do well - though Padm� carried some misgivings. However, there was no time for second thoughts as the race got underway. Though Anakin stalled on the starting line, his speedy podracer soon caught up with the pack, and eventually went head-to-head with Sebulba. After a tense race, both podracers suddenly got entangled, jamming them together. Anakin finally broke free to shoot towards the finishing line, but Sebulba wasn't so lucky. As his rival crashed in the desert, Anakin won the Boonta Eve Classic...and his freedom. Qui-Gon hadn't been able to free Shmi as well, so after a tearful farewell, Anakin set off with Qui-Gon to his ship. However, before they got there, a mysterious warrior attacked the Jedi, though Qui-Gon managed to flee. Shaken, Qui-Gon introduced Anakin to Obi-Wan Kenobi. When they reached the capital, Anakin went with Padm� and Queen Amidala to speak with Senator Palpatine, while Qui-Gon informed the Jedi Council that he had found the Chosen One. He believed Anakin could restore balance to the Force, as prophecied by ancient Jedi lore. The Council had their doubts, but agreed to test Anakin. Skywalker passed their tests, but the Council told Qui-Gon he would not be trained as a Jedi. "He is too old," Mace Windu pointed out, and Yoda had commented earlier that Anakin carried much fear within him. Though Anakin was saddened that he could not be trained, he was still able to tag along with Qui-Gon as Queen Amidala returned to Naboo. Once there, Anakin followed along with the Jedi as they and the Queen attempted to get into the palace and capture the invading Trade Federation Viceroy. However, the dark warrior from Tatooine appeared again, and battled the Jedi. Anakin had his own problems; the ship he had clambered in to hide from the fighting started up, and took him up into space, on automatic pilot, heading for the rest of the Naboo ships. They were trying to blow up the Droid Control Ship orbiting the planet, and Anakin tried to help as best he could - but a blast from a droid starfighter sent him spinning into the Control Ship. He crashed inside, and tried to fend off droids trying to encircle him. He accidentally fired two proton torpedos into the main reactor, and rode out the chain reaction that destroyed the Control Ship. Back on Naboo, Anakin was hailed a hero, but it was not all good news; Qui-Gon had been slain by the dark warrior. However, his apprentice, Obi-Wan, was now a Jedi Knight, and Yoda reluctantly allowed him to train Skywalker. Anakin vowed to become a great Jedi Knight, and make his mother - and Qui-Gon - proud. |
