| Anakin Skywalker was a special boy. He had extraord- inary powers that could not be explained by Anakin, but he knew he was different. Yet he was still a slave, forced to work for greedy masters who used his skills to line their own pockets. Anakin was only three when he and his mother Shmi became the property of Gardulla the Hutt. Gardulla wasn't a fair master, but neither did she recognise the strange talents Anakin possessed. Gardulla liked to wager on the podraces that were popular on Tatooine, but one such gamble cost the Hutt her two slaves. Anakin considered his next owner, Watto, to be a better master than the Hutt crimelord, but still the situation of being a slave was certainly not appealing. Anakin helped out in Watto's junk shop, and used his natural skills with mechanics tomaintain Watto's stock. During his time with Watto, Anakin uncovered another special ability he had; while repairing a podracer for Watto, Anakin decided to give it a spin. Watto was shocked; no human being could race pods, as they required reactions too advanced for the species. Yet the slave boy could do it, so Watto set about entering Anakin into races, hoping to win a lot with the boy's piloting talent. However, Anakin was only young, and never managed to win - or even finish - a race...especially not with his arch-rival Sebulba on the track. During one race, Sebulba used an underhanded move to cause Anakin to crash. Luckily the boy was not hurt, but the pod was wrecked - and Watto was furious. Anakin was ordered to repair the pod, and had to attent Jawa swap meets to gather components for the racer. However, at times like this, Anakin didn't just collect parts for Watto's pod; he was creating his own podracer in secret at his hovel. He boasted that it would be the fastest ever, and used all of his talents to ensure it would be. As if building a podracer wasn't enough for a nine yearold slave, he was also creating his own protocol droid, to help Shmi with her housework. Neither project was finished, but both were well on their way. Watto still made Anakin help out in his shop, which didn't allow him as much time as he'd like with his projects. However, one day, Watto's orders paid off when he was asked to watch the shop while three strange outlanders were trying to precure a new hyperdrive... |

| The name Anakin dates back to the earliest drafts of Star Wars, where the character was to play a role similar to Luke's in A New Hope. In this early incarnation, Annakin Starkiller was the 16-year old son of Kane |
