1998 **1/2 103 mins.
The first time I saw this film, I absolutely despised it. The second time, I thought, "Well, it's not that bad." The third time, I compromised and gave it two and a half stars.
The story itself is not all that bad. The crew of the Enterprise is trying to defend a race of people who live on a planet with regenerative powers. A few plot points falter a bit, but all in all, the story is still very intriguing. The main problems with the film are the campy, cheesy dialogue and a few story elements that just don't really make too much sense. For example, at the beginning Data (Brent Spiner) seems to be an evil android. Later, it is explained why he acted the way he did, but it still seems almost irrelevant to the story. As for the dialogue, well, let's just say that the characters have a habit of stating the obvious and being very redundant.
Star Trek: Insurrection is, by no means, a great installment in the Star Trek legacy, but it's not as bad as Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
Rated PG for space violence and some language.
