cat people
1982 **** 118 mins.
Upon my first viewing of this film, I gave it one and a half stars. I absolutely despised it. After watching it a second time, I set aside the original films and enjoyed this film unto itself. Upon my third viewing, I allowed myself to compare it to the original, and found that it actually had a lot in common with it. Think of this as the evolution of Cat People
The story has been spiced up quite a bit, adding a new character (Malcolm McDowell in his best performance to date) and a heavy sense of sexuality. Once the viewer forgets the original, he sees how truly similar this film is to the original. The film is visually compelling and very well-done. David Bowie's title song is nothing short of brilliance, due in large part to the music by Giorgio Moroder, which allows the film to have one of the greatest musical soundtracks I've ever heard.
The downside of this film is that the plot doesn't always hold up. True, the plot is not a believable plot anyway, but the film doesn't display it in such a way that we could believe it.
While it's not the brilliant film that the original was, this version of Cat People is still quite an experience, and a great film to watch.
Rated R for strong sexual content, nudity, violence, and language.
