BRAM STOKER'S
Dracula
1992 ***1/2 130 mins.
Here is another one of those classic cases where just because a film is closer to the book doesn't mean that it's better. How I can best describe this film is stylistic but cheesy. The costumes and sets are terrific, as are the cinematography and artistic value. However, it (pardon the pun) bears all the distinctive marks of a B-movie vampire flick. The scares are loud and cheesy, as are the animals Dracula becomes. Also, the film seems to drag on a bit too long, giving us two places where the climax could have been. Luckilly, it is at one of them.
Don't get me wrong, though, this is still a film worth seeing for its great performances by Gary Oldman as Dracula and Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. Winona Ryder is gorgeous as the object of Dracula's affection, and even Keanu Reeves seems to work, even though he looks a bit awkward.
Rated R for violence, sexuality, and language.
