Who will take over in Sunderland

08.10.02                                                                                                                                      Previous Page           Next Page

It doesn’t surprise many people that Peter Reid will get the sack this season.  Last season was awful, this season equally dismal.  To spend money on Phil Babb is bad enough, and getting Tore Andre Flo to be a replacement for Niall Quinn is catastrophic.  Flo and Quinn are different players, the only similarity is the height.  Compile that with the long term injury of Kevin Phillips, au revoir Peter!

5/4 David O'Leary

5/2 George Graham

5/1 Alan Curbishley

7/1 Martin O'Neill

10/1 Mick McCarthy

12/1 Niall Quinn

25/1 Gary Megson

66/1 Alan Shearer

The above are the odds listed in BBC.co.uk for the successor in Sunderland.  Who do I pick?  David o’ Really? is my choice.  Sunderland’s problem is scoring goals and confidence.  It has the worst goal scoring record in all 4 divisions and can’t defend set pieces.  Thus it needs a manager who can help to boost up the attack and knows how to organise the defence. George Graham is probably too defensive minded and is the ‘author’ behind “boring boring Arsenal in the 80s and early 90s”.  O’Leary built up his reputation in Leeds with a wonderful attacking side and was an excellent defender in his playing days.

It was also noted that most of Reid’s backroom staff are gone with the exception of Niall Quinn.  Quinn is familiar with both O’Leary and George Graham in their time at the Arse.  He would have a big say on who shall be the next gaffer.  Whoever comes in will have a hard time as he will not be able to buy any new players until January when the transfer window opens again.  Good Luck to him!

Let’s turn our attention back to my favourite team, Liverpool.  Lightning does strike twice!  Well done, Michael Owen!  I have predicted a 2-0 scoreline with Owen grabbing both goals.  Well, I was half right, or half wrong?  No matter what the criticism from the press or jealous people are, I thought it was a controlled performance by the team.  Chelsea didn’t get much sniff after the opening quarter and the best chance went to Baros, who was over-excited after doing the hard work of nutmegging Desailly.  Hyppia gave a pleasant surprise when he hit a fantastic shot while Gerrard, besides the shot that hit the crossbar, made too many wayward passes.  Nevertheless, it was a welcome 3-points to keep pace with the Arse.

International week this weekend.  Somehow, it is not excited as EPL.  Maybe it is due to the commentary and pre-match programme (John Dykes is my favourite presenter).  Anyway, will update with my prediction of the England game later.
