kOgUI                                  The Band
kOgUI was initiated by Rafael Sarmiento, fantastic "gaitero" who wanted to share his passion for the folkloric music of North Colombia with world music lovers.

The band was created beginning of 2002 thanks to the valuable contribution of Rafael's very good friends: Jorge and Alfonso, not only through their skills and professionalism, but above all with their love and enthusiasm towards Colombian music.

kOgUI's rhythms are based on flute, clarinet, drums and vocals.
THE NAME:

Kogui is the name of the Indigenous people living in the Sierra Nevada, Santa Marta, Atlantic coast of Colombia.

They are one of the few South American cultures that did not disappear after the Spanish Inquisition -since they managed to reach the higher parts of the Sierra and hide.  Since then, they say about themselves that they are responsible for the balance of the World, always threaten by the actions of "civilisation".

Two of the main
intruments used by the band - gaita and maracas - are originate from the Kogui people.
