Fantasy Vs Fictionalism

The above discussion was carried out with Mrs .Somalatha of IMS .kochi .She is incharge of the English department involved in the training for competitve exams like CAT , XAT .I express my gratitude for sharing her valuable time with me for sorting out my dilemma's . You can contact her by clicking on her name link below.Don'y forget to add " To somalatha "as subject . - somalatha

kochikkaran : Do you relate alternate reality to your existence .

mam : Sorry ...

kochikkaran : Do you in times set aside realty and slip into a different mode ?

mam : You mean fantasy land .That does help, sometimes .

kochikkaran : How?

mam :When you are feeling dejected or irritated at not getting something .Imagining for a moment that you have achieved it helps .

kochikkaran : that is switching off from reality .How about fictionalising things.

mam : In the sense ....

kochikkaran : Taking for example ....you have a difficult situation ......You have nobody to help ...pretty intimidating position .....Suddenly u relate u'rself to a warrior ..who has ....to face a battle .and that u must fight for u'r survival .....seems to add some glucose to u'r blood stream ..

mam : That is okay ...as long as u don't allow it to spill over ....

kochikkaran : In the sense ....

mam : ...That is....if u r able to control the situation ....consciously.....with a fine balance between realism and alternate realty ...where others don't seem to notice any thing ....and u carry on deftly, using the power of the alternate reality to overcome the situation ....

kochikkaran : when does anyone seem to spill over ......

mam : well at times ...when u get carried away by the character u may be visualizing .....when your defenses may be down and your private reality is exposed to observers who cannot be expected to relate to it , with the result that you may be perceived to be “abnormal” .....[ pointing her index finger towards her head in a circular motion ]

kochikkaran : So what is the limit ....

mam : .......You have to figure out the limits yourself ......depending on the company and the setting you may find yourself in ....wherever you perceive a “license” to be yourself, you could “lower your guard”. If that is not the case, and you wish to maintain “normalcy”, you obviously have to exercise caution. Of course ,all this applies only to instances when you are consciously making an effort to prop up your responses and actions. If the “Fictionalising “ is happening as a result of some unconscious psychosomatic urge, you are of course, in a different league altogether !

kochikkaran : what do you think is the difference between -- fantasizing ----and --- fictionalizing ------

mam : In fantasizing , the person takes off or switches off from reality in a conscious effort to ease the strain of reality and it is ,or should be , a “retrievable” condition ....... In fictionalizing .....u are on different ground .You are probably playing a dangerous game, unless the reins are completely within your hold. In combination with slight psychiatric disturbances ,this habit of fictionalizing can possibly drive you into sanity threatening realms...

kochikkaran : which u think is better - fantasising ----or --- fictionalising ------

mam : The better of two evils ?....... Well .........it is true that reality can be annoying at times but it is better to rely on it .....in the end u have to come back .....u cannot switch off from the world for too long ,as in fantasizing, without consequences .......Stay and fight ....but when you are alone ....u can seek help from whatever medium u think works best for you, but let it be a conscious decision........Unconscious actions cannot produce controlled results ......... In the former u have to accommodate reality, in the latter, you are not guided by reality.
