Domain III, Competency 008

The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in the learning process.

Reflection

Motivating students by actively engaging them in the learning process is a gift a good teacher gives their students that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.  Constructivist learning environments are a great way to impart these values to students.  I have seen too many young people give up on learning and education because they were never excited by the process, and it is heartbreaking.  I hope to be able to use constructivism to make learning relevant, interesting, and FUN for my students.  One of the ways I have been able to motivate my adult learners is through asking probing questions and facilitating open discussions of topics.  Relating these topics to our lives can make the learning experience personal, which gives all of us a stake in it.  Problem-based learning is also a practical skill that will, hopefully, cross over into everyday life, not just solving educational conundrums.  Inquiry has gotten me into as much trouble in my life as it has helped me, but asking questions is the only way to get answers.  Encouraging students to ask why, how, when, who, or where can only expand their knowledge base and their enthusiasm for learning.
