HON'BLE CHIEF JUSTICE DEVINDER GUPTA
Born on April 4, 1943 at Shimla. R.W.Bro.
Devinder Gupta Studied in Sanatan Dharam High School Shimla and
graduated from R.P.C.S.D.B.College Shimla in 1964. He obtained Law
Degree in first division from Punjab University Law College
Chandigarh in 1966. After undergoing apprenticeship and qualifying
the Bar Council Examination he was enrolled as an Advocate on
March 23, 1967 with the Punjab & Haryana Bar Council. He
started his practice in Shimla under the guidance of his father
L.Ram Krishan Gupta, Senior Advocate. After getting firm
foundation of having practiced in the District Courts of Himachal
Pradesh on Original and Appellate side from 1967 to 1975, he
shifted to Himachal Pradesh High Court, Shimla in 1976-77.
He was appointed as a permanent Judge of
Himchal Pradesh High Court on June 25, 1990. He was later
transferred as a Judge, of Delhi High Court.
As a Judge of Delhi High Court R.W.Bro.Devinder
Gupta was appointed as Executive Chairman of Delhi State Legal
Services Authority and had been looking after Legal Aid Movement
in Delhi. He was the Acting Chief Justice, Delhi High Court on
four different occasions and in March 2003 was transferred to
Andhra Pradesh High Court.
He was sworn-in as Chief Justice, High Court of
Judicature of Andhra Pradesh on 6th March, 2003. During his tenure
as the Chief Justice in addition to his outstanding judgements,
R.W.Bro.Devinder Gupta ensured a quantum leap in the
computerisation programme of the Judiciary.
He retired on attaining the age of
Superannuation on 04-04-2005.
R.W.Bro.Chief Justice Devinder Gupta was
initiated in Lodge Hydaspes No. 4842 E.C., Shimla on 14th
November, 1973. Passed to the Degree of F.C.F.M. on 12.12.1973 and
Raised to the Degree of M.M. on 18.04.1974.
He occupied the Eastern Chair in the said Lodge
during the year 1980-81 after which he remained Secretary of the
Lodge. He again occupied the Eastern Chair in the year 1989-90. He
is a Founder Member of Lodge Himparbat No. 233, Shimla and
occupied Eastern Chair of that Lodge and as also Secretary of the
Lodge.
He is a Founder Member of Lodge Harballabh
No.240, Jalandhar, of Lodge Raghunathjee No.255, Jammu, Lodge
Justice Prakash Naraian No.281, New Delhi and Lodge Kinner Kailash
No.320, Shimla.
He has been a Joining Member of Lodge Prospect
No. 92, Shimla and was Secretary of this Lodge.
R.W.Bro.Devinder Gupta was advanced in the
Pinnacle Lodge of Mark Master Masons No.10, Shimla on 18.05.1978.
He was elevated in the Sunshine Lodge of Royal
Ark Mariners No.10, Shimla.
He has been the founder Member of Prakash Lodge
of Mark Master Masons No74 Shimla and occupied the Eastern Chair
of this Lodge.
He was a Founder Member of Narain Lodge of
Royal Ark Mariners No.74 Shimla and Commander of Narain Lodge of
Royal Ark Mariners No.74 Shimla
He is a Joining Member of East & West Lodge
of Mark Master Masons No. 33, New Delhi and East & West Lodge
of Royal Ark Mariners No. 33, New Delhi.
He was exalted in Chapter Prospect No. 54,
Shimla and was the Zerubabal of this Chapter.
He is a Member of Royal Arch Chapter Hydaspes
No. 4842 E. C. Shimla, and joining Member of Chapter Sunder Heera
No.40 New Delhi.
R.W.Bro.Devinder Gupta was inducted into the
Order of Secret Monitor in Sundram Enclave No. 110.
R.W.Bro. Devinder Gupta was inducted in the
Great Himalayan Council of Allied Masonic Degrees No. 194 and The
United Himalayan Council of R & S M No. 257 Shimla.
He was the Chairman of Masonic Fraternity of
Shimla for number of years and continued to be the Secretary of
almost all Masonic bodies functioning at Shimla.
R.W.Bro.Devinder Gupta has Initiated his two
sons W.Bro. Neeraj Gupta and W.Bro.Rajesh Gupta in Lodge Himparbat
No. 233 Shimla on the same day. Both of them are now Past Masters
of Lodge Kinner Kailash 320, Shimla and Lodge Justice Prakash
Narain, New Delhi respectively.
His younger brother .W Bro Bhupender Gupta,
Senior Advocate at Shimla is also a very active senior mason and
is presently the Chairman of Masonic Fraternity of Shimla.
R.W.Bro.Devinder Gupta's father Bro Ram Krishan
Gupta was first in the family to see the light in Freemasonry.
R.W.Bro.Devinder Gupta held various offices
both in the Regional Grand Lodge of Northern India and the Grand
Lodge of India.
He has distinguished himself in all the offices
held by him particularly as the Registrar of the Grand Lodge of
India.
He is presently the Deputy Grand Master of the
Grand Lodge of India and has deservedly been elected as the next
Grand Master to lead the Grand Lodge of India.
