Tough lesson

Learnt a very tough lesson today.. that God is sovereign.

Job 1:21 "And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD.""

Pro 24:16 "For a righteous man may fall seven times And rise again, But the wicked shall fall by calamity"

Seven Point Check (Identifying God's Voice II)

Below are some probing questions that I will try to ask myself to determine God's direction for me :> There is also a recommended action if any of the answers is Yes.

7 point Check (with Probing questions)

1. God's Voice often Conflicts with the world's reasoning

> Is it a popular trend with the world?
> Is it a choice that most non-christians will take?

If yes, you should reconsider and check your motive.

2. God's Voice will Clash with our Fleshly Nature

> Does it contradict any of your christian values?
> Do you feel the craving for it in your flesh?
> Are you responding to your intense if not unquenching desire for it?

If yes, you should exercise resistance to this decision.

3. God's Voice Considers the Effects on other People

> Will it have a negative impact on someone else?
> Does it compromise God's standard of loving people?

If yes, you should reconsider this decision.

4. God's Voice is Patient, not Rushed

> Do you feel you have to do it immediately?
> Do you feel there is no other choice available?

If yes, you should put it on hold, pray, and wait on God.

5. God's Voice always Considers the Consequences

> Have the consequences never cross your mind?
> Is there a possiblity that you can never afford it?

If yes, you should count the cost now and reconsider.

6. God's Voice is Not Discerned by Nonbelievers

> Are your advisors non-christian?
> Are there not a single christian that give you the nod?
> Did the inspiration comes from a non-christian friend or source?

If yes, seek christian counsel immediately.

7. God's Voice will Bring Peace to our spirits

> Do you feel troubled or worried when you think of it?
> Are you losing your confidence regarding it?

If yes, put it on hold, pray, and wait on God.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Example 1:
I dreamt of a 4D number which I believe God wanted me to bet on.

Is it a popular trend with the world? Yes
Is it a choice that most non-christians will take? Yes
Does it contradict any of your christian values? Yes
Do you feel the craving for it in your flesh? Yes

This is unlikely to be from God hehe!

Example 2:
I felt God wanted me to marry a woman who is already attached.

Does it contradict any of your christian values? Yes
Will it have a negative impact on someone else? Yes
Do you feel troubled or worried when you think of it? Yes

Either no no or wait.

Example 3:
I felt I had to quit my job because the pay is not high enough and that is making me frustrated.

Is it a choice that most non-christians will take? Yes
Are you responding to your intense if not unquenching desire for it? Yes
Do you feel you have to do it immediately? Yes

Check motive. Hold on, wait, and pray.

Remember ..

If in doubt .. check the WORD, and PRAY.

A rare weekday afternoon update! Took 1/2 day leave and gota run to church for some kids tuition later!

Identifying God's Voice

The below points are adapted from How to Listen to God (Charles Stanley). I find it so useful in helping us check if what we heard in our hearts are from God!

+ We are often confused, if not frustrated, by the conflicting voices that comes into our brains everyone day. Below are 7 points which can help us identify the voice of God. I have added scriptures passages to explain the points :>

1. God's Voice often Conflicts with the world's reasoning

Lk 6:39 "To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either."

Rom 12: 2 "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

2. God's Voice will Clash with our Fleshly Nature

1 Cor 2:14 "But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

Mt 26:41 "The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

3. God's Voice Considers the Effects on other People

1 Cor 8:9 "But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak."

Phi 2:4 "Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. "

4. God's Voice is Patient, not Rushed

Ps 27:14 "Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD! "

Hab 2:3 "For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will
not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry. "

5. God's Voice always Considers the Consequences

1 Cor 6:12 "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any."

Lk 14:28 "For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it"

6. God's Voice is Not Discerned by Nonbelievers

1 Cor 2:14 "But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

2 Cor 6:14 "Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?"

7. God's Voice will Bring Peace to our spirits

1 Cor 14:33 "For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints."

Phi 4:7 "and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Col 3:15 "And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let us recap ..

1. God's Voice often Conflicts with the world's reasoning
2. God's Voice will Clash with our Fleshly Nature
3. God's Voice Considers the Effects on other People
4. God's Voice is Patient, not Rushed
5. God's Voice always Considers the Consequences
6. God's Voice is Not Discerned by Nonbelievers
7. God's Voice will Bring Peace to our spirits

(I'm a software guy .. forgive me. I packaged some samples into tool form hehe)

Sample 1 : Weiming believe God wanted him to go overseas as a missionary, leaving an ailing mother with cancer. He wanted to obey, but felt he should also be with his mum.

Check Results :

Principle 1 (World) passed
Principle 2 (Flesh) passed
Principle 3 (People) breaks down.
Principle 5 (Consequences) breaks down.
Principle 7 (Peace) breaks down

Possible Solution :
It will be wiser for Weiming to wait for God's timing, while seeking counsel and confirmation. It should be his priority now to take care of his mum. If his calling is true, God will make a way, in His own timing, of course.

Sample 2 : An unbeliever friend suggest to Jane that she should immediately switch career. It struck her that the idea seems to speak to her. She wanted to find a more meaningful job, and also a better pay.

Check Results :

Principle 2 (Flesh) ?
Principle 4 (Patient) breaks down
Principle 6 (Non-believers) breaks down
Principle 7 (Peace) passed

Possible Solution:
Jane will be wiser to double check her reason for switching career (Principle 2). She should only make the choice if she is sure that her intentions are not fleshly centred. She should also seek counsel from believers, and of coz .. wait on God :>

I'm sure if you read this far, you will have noticed that most of our intentions are kinda mixed up. In one hand, we have very valid reason that God has spoken. On the other hand, we may not have the peace or ability etc to carry it out.

I seriously hope these guidelines not only can help me, but also anyone who is reading this  now :>. Do drop me a note if you find it helpful!

God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Know that if its God's will for you regarding any issues, He will, and is able to, put in harmony, all the principles in His word, to make your dreams come true, and of course, in His timing, and His sovereign authority!

Jokes #1

I heard this from the pulpit today .. funny!

A pastor of a church was having a banquet with all the church elders and leaders. All of a sudden, he stood up, lifted his wine as if to toast, and shouted,

"The happiest time of my life was spent with woman who was not my wife!!"

Sweat poured down from the foreheads of everyone who heard this 'toast'! Some of the elders couldn't believe his 'confession' and droped their jaws, while most of the others were holding tightly to their chairs.

The pastor, grinning with a smile, chirped,

"She's my mother!!!"

Joke #2

These were from my colleagues ..

Do you know why do many men in their thirties grew fat?

Ans : The average life span of a worm (those that eats up the food in your stomach) is about thirty years. When they die, the man will grow fat :>

Why do vegetarian men remain thin in their thirties?

Ans : Vegetarian food are more healthy and non-toxic. So the worm lives longer >_<

My plans (Upper Room Devotional)

Jesus said, "The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him."
-John 8:29 (NIV)

>
One of the most difficult attitudes for Christians to master is a state of mind that allows God to interrupt our plans.

> Often when we make plans, we are not willing to
yield them.

> Plans set in concrete can become
idols and express our defiance toward the Lord.

> Matthew 6:33 offers us a different way of planning -- according to
God's purposes: "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

> A faith-filled attitude acknowledges the importance of having good, God-centered plans but also recognizes that
divine interruptions can change our plans.

> When the older woman next door needs a lock fixed or the young couple down the street asks for a ride, these may be opportunities brought to us by God. They may be answers to prayers in which we have asked for help in doing God's will or chances to share God's love.

> Today when we pray, we can ask God to help us with
planning.

> Then, as we acknowledge God's sovereignty and invite God to interrupt at any moment, we will be surprised by what God does in and through our life.

Quote of the Day

After living a messed up teenage life filled with casual dating and careless living, a woman, who has become a christian and is now in her twenties, remarked ..

"Why didn't anyone tell me earlier that it was wrong?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

That reminded me that the current casino debate is important. Let us not make the same mistake again :>

Eze 3:18 "When I say to the wicked, "You shall surely die,' and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand."

The Call of God

I used to wonder how do I know the call of God in my life. I have also heard questions regarding how are we suppose to know our calling, especially if we did not hear from Him.

May I boldly suggest this -
The Need is the Call.

Example 1 : Jesus

Mt 14:14 "And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick."

We all know that Jesus did not do anything that is not in the will of His Father. It seems  from the above verse that Jesus healed those people because He felt the Need to.

I'm not talking about the common needs we we experienced (like to buy a new discman or watch a movie hehe). I would like to suggest that it is a
great need, a strong burden, a deep conviction, to see certain things get done.

Jesus was
"moved with compassion" when He saw the crowd. He certainly took the need He felt as an indication of the call of God for Him that day.

Example 2 : Nehemiah

Neh 1:3-4 "And they said to me, "The survivors who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire. So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven."

When Nehemiah heard that the walls back home in Jerusalem was broken down, he felt a
great burden. Basically, he wept, and mourned, fasted and prayed.

In those days, the wall of a city represents it's security and safety.

The amazing thing is that through the event, Nehemiah deduced it was God's call for him to go back and rebuilt the wall. Somehow, he even managed to mustered enough faith to ask the King to let him go home to fix the walls.

Neh 2:5 "And I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' tombs, that I may rebuild it.""

The rest is history. There were great oppositions, but he prevailed.

The challenge :

If you are convinced that
the need is the call of God for you today, what will you do?

Basic Spiritual discipline (eg attending church, cellgp, reading the bible) do help in keeping us in the will of God. But I'm also convinced that it will take us an extra effort to soften our hearts inorder to feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

Nehmiah wept, mourned, fasted and prayed, and deduced that it was the call of God for him.

What needs do we see around us today? Helping the poor? Giving seat in the MRT? Donating to the blind man on the street? Or be a missionary for Christ?

Let us put aside our busy-ness and commitments, and respond to the inner tugging of the Holy Spirit!

Heb 3:15 ".. Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion."

If you see the need, you see the Call of God.

Excellent Dailies!

Today's daily Devotionals are all so good! I sum up Ulf Ekman's below!

The Gift of Faith

To another [is given] faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:9

> In certain situations, where an extra measure of faith is needed, this gift comes into operation.

> When others start to worry, you are supernaturally calm. When others become depressed, you are happy. When others cannot see solutions to the problem, you know the solution is on its way.

> Faith is the conviction of things not seen, and the gift of faith epitomizes this.

> You are fully convinced about something that no one else is sure about.

> The gift of faith carries you through the most difficult circumstances and impossible situations, past the biggest hindrances.

> The gift of faith is not arrogant; it simply knows that it knows that it knows that God is faithful, willing and able to save, even in the darkest circumstances.

Interpretation of Tongues (Ulf Ekman's Daily Devotional)

To another [is given] the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
1 Corinthians 12:1
0

> It is not about a state of psychotic ecstasy but rather about the
Holy Spirit giving one or more fragments of language, whether this is a human language or the language of angels, which we do not understand.

> There have been occasions when I received words that people later have told me they had understood perfectly. But I had not understood anything.

> When the interpretation comes, it is usually not a word-for-word interpretation but a concentration of the most important aspects. It is the main topic of the given message.

> Speaking in tongues for the purpose of building up our own inner man requires no interpretation. This is between God and us, and God understands. However,

> Numerous messages in tongues should not be delivered in a church service without interpretation, for the messages will not be a blessing to the church unless they are
understood.

> The emphasis is not on speaking in tongues per se but rather on the clear and effective
message that the Lord wants to speak into peoples hearts.
