CAPC

Kids First is a non-profit organization funded by Health Canada Community Action Program for Children (CAPC) as well as the Canadian Pre-Natal Nutrition Program (CPNP) in the Guysborough and Antigonish counties. In May 1992, the Government of Canada announced CAPC, a component of the Child Development Initiative.Community Action is one in a series of steps taken in response to the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child

Health Canada regional offices delivered the Program. CAPC funds community groups to establish and deliver services that address the developmental needs of at risk children (0-6 years).Long-term financial assistance is provided through contributions to support these services.

Community Action encourages early investment in children so that they get a better start in life, are ready to start school and so that their chances to participate fully in society as adults are enhanced. Expected services include: parent/family resouce centres, child development centres, parenting education and infant stimulation.

The program is managed by the federal and provincial governments at the provincial level and by community-based volunteer boards at the local level. The community is the focus for decision making and action. Partnerships and collaborative activities at the community level are an essential component of CAPC.
