This is a memorable trip for me just because i was travelling alone and i didn't know anything about the city at all nor know people who lives there. As soon as i arrived at the airport, i took a tourist brochure, found a hostel listing and took a cab there to Reclamation St. in Kowloon. At the time it was just about $20.00/night.
The area was stinky, and it's right in the "palengke" or maketplace area. The rest of the building must be a retirement home for hongkongers because the rest of the level was resided by the locals. (Just a note to travellers, hostelling is the cheapest and the best way to meet fellow young travellers because you get to learn some tips of where to go and what to do from their experiences).
What is there to do in Hongkong???, try shopping!!!, but the very first day i was there, i walked along the main st. called Nathan Rd. in Kowloon, and purchased something i realize was a major rif off. When i tried to take it back.... I got lost since the shops looks all alike (and i obviously can't read chinese characters!!), so learn from this.
If you're not into shopping, try bars and clubs. When i tried to go to Macau, i took the train early in the morning and went to the port but stupidly, i forgot to take my passport! (duh!). Macau is a best place to go if you want to gambling. Most hongkongese go there for that purpose. Instead, i ended up going back to my hotel and sleeping instead... then went to a bar called "Rick's Cafe" in Tsim Tsa Tsui??... i think it's spelled and it's in the kowloon side of hongkong. It's mainly a tourist hang-out and even the staffs were british!. I met a couple of british locals who toured me around hongkong particulary the victoria peak, the market and the beaches. Then we watched the "dragon boat festival" which is not much of a sight because of the rain. Up to now, I still get in touch with the people i met in Hongkong particuarly a girl from Japan, and one from Korea. If you want to check out other places i've been to, go to THAILAND. Or you can check out PHILIPPINES.
