On our first night in Kuala Lumpur, we stayed in an interesting hotel near chinatown so we could go around town the next day easily. I mentioned "interesting" because there was a "Recreation Floor", which we found out later, was full of prostitutes with Indian customers...(I found out when the elevator opened accidentally on 7th floor). Anyway, KL is a very busy city. It's also very diverse due to its different ethnic backgrounds. Mainly consists of Malay, Indians and Chinese; therefore, they are very fluent in English (surprise, surprise!!). Also influenced by different cultures, their food is to die for. We had the best curry ever but the catch is, its exorbitant price in chinatown. Anywhere where the tourists go, the prices go up. It all depends on where we are, so the trick is..always follow the locals, you can save a lot of money that way.

BATU FERRINGHI, Penang Island

The main attraction we went to is the tallest building in the world and the Batu Cave. Batu Cave because we wanted to see "Thaipusam". But we missed it by 42 hrs. The reason being is we wanted to see the body piercing they do as an act of contrition during this religious festival, to honor Lord Murugu. The same as what we have in Pampanga during "mahal na araw" in the Philippines, except in their case, one personm actually pulls the chariot of their Lord using several strings pierced into their back (ouch!). They have a procession that ends up in Batu Cave. From there, the final ceremony began.

From there, we went to Penang island. It's located at the northwest part of Malaysia near Langkawi (or Georgetown). We spent a few nights there basking under the sun, jetskiing etc. That island is not really in our agenda since we planned to go to the east coast (but we found out it's monsoon season there)It was a laid back place, not a whole lot of young tourists but very popular as an all inclusive tour with the travel agencies here in NA. It can be reached via ferry or car. One of the tourist's (backpackers mainly) hang out there is a pub called "REGGAE CLUB" They also accomodate backpackers at a reasonable price. Beer is at 10.00 ringgit which is about $2.70 US, that is unless you like "Calsberg" beer (can't stand it!).

Most of the roads is one way st. You can rent a moped cheaply for 25 riggit/day but don't forget your road map!!!. The best beach to go there is in Batu Ferringhi, about 30 minutes drive from town (but for us it's an hour including our "getting lost" time).... and that's it folks!. Our next destination was in here: THAILAND. The island we spent most time in during this whole trip is called "koh samui"... check it out!. If you want to see more beach pictures, go to the clearest beach I've seen and I'm not being biased...PHILIPPINES.
