go to peru

The view from the top of Dead Woman's Pass was immense. I'd never been this high before - the air is thin and the view is extremely clear. We stayed there for about half an hour, and then descended into the valley for lunch

the rest of the day was not so hard. at the top of the next pass i took a nice photo of our guide, Leonardo. The final shot here is a view of the day 2 campsite

day 3 was a leisurely walk to our campsite next to the hostel. once there we had a few beers (well, maybe a few more), and then visited the nearby ruins of Huinay Huayna. Some advice - don't take photos when drunk. And rememeber to always take a spare film

The following day we got up at 4am to make it to Machu Picchu for sunrise. We paused briefly at Intipunku, where it is traditional to watch the sun come up over Machu Picchu. Leonardo suggested the view was better lower down, so we continued on. The scans here don't really do it justice - after 4 days of walking it was an absolutely amazing sight - a huge set of ruins nestled amongst a dramatic set of mountains. As the sun came up the light changed - that lovely early morning light gradually illuminated the ruins. Breathtaking.
