go to peru

A couple of people have asked me for comments on travelling in Peru. So here's what we did, and what I would recommend:

We didn't book anything in Peru before we went, except for a hotel room on the first night. Which was a mistake, because when we decided not to go there, and opted for a room near the airport, our original hotel tracked us down! Oops.

Our flight to Peru cost about 500 quid with Iberia. I recommend stopping off in Madrid for a couple of days - its a cheap way to add another city to your list. When we got to Peru there were tourist people at the airport, they booked us a room in a nearby hotel for 50 dollars (twin), nice hotel, very easy. They also booked the flight to Cusco the next morning - that was also 50 dollars.

Vic at our hotel In Cusco we stayed at the Hotel Corihuasi, on Calle Suecia. At US 35 a night it wasn't cheap, but very nice, and had a nice view. Penny and Mel were staying in a hostel at a cheaper but very nice place, I think about US 10 a night? Its on Santa Catalina Angosta, which is off the square - stand and face the Cathedral, turn right and its there - on the right, just past Mama Africas.

Tours - we did the Inca trail with SAS. Not the cheapest (US 195), but extremely good. Recommended. Every meal was 3 courses, the porters were helpful, the guide spoke wonderful English, I remember having a good discussion about Monty Python with him one day! Also, I think if you pay more, you get a good bunch of people doing your trip - they're the interesting ones who want a good quality trip (well, we got a good bunch). We didn't go rafting with SAS - but I think we should have. Our rafting company was pants.

Tourists leave a lot of momentos behindNightlife in Cusco... hmmm... Cross Keys pub. Norton Rats. Wonderful place in Teqsecocha called Los Perros. Has an Aussie flag outside, couches inside, very Fat Dog-ish. In fact, closest I've found to the Fat Dog in 3 years of looking (if you don't know the Fat Dog, go to Rotorua). I can't remember where we spent late evenings, think it was a little club 50m down Calle Plateros.

concentration from mel Hungover mornings are best spent indulging in an English breakfast at Greens cafe (Tandapata), or in the pub up the hill from the street next to the Cathedral (Triunfo), about 150m on the left. They have Jenga there

In Puno we took a tour of Titicaca with Edgar tours, on the pedestrianised street. All the tourist companies seem to offer the same sort of service. Just along from their office was a really nice restaurant, looked quite trendy / posh, well nice Alpaca curry for about 3 quid. Yummy. Also we stayed in the Manco Capac Inn - only US10 per night for a twin room. You get accosted by people as you get off the bus - listen out for Manco Capac Inn being offered.

view of el misti as we boarded the plane In Arequipa we stayed at Hotel Miamaka - it was really nice, and US 20 per night. Tours - everyone offers the same tour options - we did a 2 day trip to the colca canyon for about 32 US each. (you can get it for 19 each if you take the cheaper option for the hotel). The nicest places to eat etc. seemed to be at the top end of calle jerusalem, although we only found that out at the end of the trip. the flight from arequipa to lima cost us 50 dollars each.

and thats about the end of my advice on peru, hope it helps
