| "A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove, but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child." | Travis Yon, (initials are TRY), a 15 year old boy from Illinois was diagnosed at age 5 with an extremely rare form of leukemia in May 1998 This type of leukemia known as Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Philadelphia Chromosome Positive presents extraordinary challenges in treatment and prognosis. Chemotherapy usually doesn't prevent recurrence of the cancer. The only hope for Travis was to have a bone marrow transplant. No one in Travis's family matched, usually the most likely source of suitable transplantable bone marrow. | Then on July 29, 1998 the National Marrow Donor Program found someone who matched out of the millions of registered donors. On September 17, 1998 Travis received his bone marrow transplant at Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin. Since the transplant, it was very up and down for Travis and his family. As you can read here, each day brought new challenges, and the process had to be dealt with one day at a time. While Travis moved occasionally from the HOT Unit at the hospital to the Ronald McDonald House, where his parents would live for 110 days, and then back to the hospital, his courageous struggle to keep trying is documented here. On July 12th, 1999 Travis was found to be Leukemia free. Since then, he has had his central line removed, which he had endured for over a year, and the number of medications needed was greatly reduced, as well as the clinic visits. September 1999 brought the start of school, which Travis could not attend the previous year, the meeting and honoring of his bone marrow donor, a "Celebration of Life" service on the anniversary of his transplant and moving on to a normal, happy and healthy childhood. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
