INTRODUCTION

Imagine this... crops that are resistant to damage, an orange that contains all the nutrients in a multivitamin, a more flavoursome tomato with cancer fighting substances, a potato that produces healthier french fries, a rice high in beta-carotene as well as bananas that deliver needed vaccines.

Is this science fiction or real science? It's real science and it is happening in laboratories today as Genetically Modified (GM) foods.

As you have learnt previously, the field of genetic agriculture is growing and has the potential to provide many positive contributions to society. However, as with any new scientific advance there are risks associated with genetic technologies. Many debates have surfaced about the safety of GM foods and crops. Is there reason for concern? What are the pros and cons of GM crops? Do you think Singapore is ready to embrace GM foods? Engage in this Webquest to explore the issues for yourself!
