This is a webquest on genetically modified food, a topic covered in the Geography Syllabus for Upper Secondary. This project offers a myriad of choices for students to learn about the pros and cons of genetically modified (GM) food products.

Learners

This webquest is intended for Secondary 3 students, studying Geography either as their Core or Elective Humanities subject.

Big Idea

For Students to be able to weigh the pros and cons of GM Foods, and make their own informed decision and position about the ethical, moral, economic, health and other considerations of the debate.

Teacher’s process

Procedure

1) Break students into groups of 5-6.
2) Assign students the WebQuest and allocate each student a group role.

3) Have students print and review appropriate evaluation rubrics, and give detailed instructions.

4) Give students deadlines.

5) Watch & monitor progress.
6) Assign days for presentation & inform students which days they will present.

Additional Thoughts

1.  Depending on the level of your students, the WebQuest will probably take 3 days in class time and 4 days to prepare on their own time.  Therefore, a good timeframe would be about one week from start to finish.

2.  Presentations may take an additional 2 days depending on class size and presentation format chosen.

3.  If computers are limited, a schedule can be developed for each group to use the computers and the time table adjusted accordingly.
