Motorcyclist dies in crash with minibus
The 24-year-old fireman, surnamed Fong, was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with serious head and leg injuries but died shortly after admission. His father said his son had just finished lunch at his Wong Tai Sin home and was about to report for duty at Sai Wan Ho Fire Station. Fong, who was not married, had bought the motorcycle after passing his driving test last year. According to reports, he lost control of his motorcycle when driving on Nga Chuk Street toward Wong Tai Sin. He then skidded along the road for several metres and into the path of an oncoming minibus which ran over him. He was trapped under the vehicle and had to be extricated by other firemen. His father said Fong joined the Fire Services about two years ago. The minibus driver was tested at the scene for alcohol but returned a zero reading. In a separate incident, a chef at a seafood and hotpot restaurant in Tsuen Wan was in a critical condition last night after being set ablaze by burning oil. A second chef was also burned in the incident and was reported to be in a stable condition. The chefs, surnamed Lau, 50, and Leung, 58, were preparing food when the pot of cooking oil caught fire and overturned. Lau was covered in flames and fell to the ground as other chefs ran to help him. He was taken to Queen Mary Hospital where his condition was reported to be critical. Leung, who had burns on his hands and body, was in stable condition. A third restaurant worker, surnamed Chan, 41, was hurt by flying glass when the light bulb in the kitchen exploded in the heat. He received treatment at Yan Chai Hospital and was then later discharged. The restaurant is situated at the Waterside Plaza shopping mall in Tsuen Wan.
