Battle for babies
Chinese University department of paediatrics professor Dr Hon Kam-lun told The Standard's MetroNews last night two of the babies were in the neo-natal intensive care unit at Prince of Wales Hospital, and the other at Princess Margaret. ``They are critically ill and still require oxygen and ventilatory support,'' Hon said. ``They require critical monitoring and treatment and, so far, the investigation for the [coronavirus] has been negative, but we will continue our investigations. ``These babies are born of mothers with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome [SARS], but it may not necessarily mean they have SARS. ``Because they were born prematurely(過早地), their poor lung conditions may be purely due to premature birth and respiratory insufficiency.'' Hon would not offer any predictions on the outlook for the babies - one of them born to a 34-year-old mother who died on Monday, two weeks after doctors delivered the child by Caesarean section as her condition deteriorated. Meanwhile, four more patients died yesterday, bringing the total number of deaths from viral pneumonia to 65. They included a 39-year-old woman who died at United Christian Hospital and who did not have previous medical problems. The others were two men and a woman, aged between 42 and 69, with a history of chronic illness. Twenty-nine new SARS cases were reported yesterday, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 1,297. They included nine medical workers and 20 from the community. Fifteen patients were discharged from hospitals yesterday and 118 others are being treated in intensive care units. A total of 181 families, comprising 463 people, have now been isolated by the Department of Health. Of these, 26 people received warning letters for not complying with the order. Nineteen new residential buildings, including the first case in Southern District, appeared for the first time in the Department of Health's list of affected buildings. The total now stands at 167. Director of Health Margaret Chan said although the daily number of new cases had dropped in the past few days, it was too soon to say the disease had been contained被控制的. ``With diseases like cholera, we can only say it has been contained if there are no new cases for a period equal to twice the incubation period,'' she said. ``But viral pneumonia is a new disease and we are still trying to understand it. As such, we will take a prudent審慎的,小心的 approach. ... If no new cases are found over a 20-day period, we can then say our preventive and combat measures against the disease have been successful.'' Chan also said the department was still examining the calibration of infra-red temperature detectors. She hoped these machines, once approved, could be used to examine the body temperatures of commuters at the Lo Wu checkpoint. She also admitted the supply of disposable covers for ear thermometers was now inadequate. ``We have already purchased more than one million extra covers to replenish(把...裝滿;把...再備足,補充[(+with)) our stocks,'' she said. The thermometers were used at Chek Lap Kok yesterday and Chan said everything went smoothly. Up to 4pm yesterday, 9,400 passengers had been tested, but no one was found to have a fever and all were allowed to board their flights. Meanwhile, Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, accompanied by Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food Yeoh Eng-kiong, visited Koway Court in Chai Wan yesterday morning. Tung vowed(鄭重宣告) the government would ensure that the estate would not become ``another Amoy Gardens''. But Chan admitted that another Koway Court resident was among the latest SARS victims. She did not give details. Nine residents at the estate have so far been infected. ``There are no signs to suggest that the disease at Koway Court is spreading in the same way as it did at Amoy Gardens, but we will continue to investigate the cause,'' she said. Eastern District Council member Leung Yiu-hong urged the health authorities to do all they could to contain(控制,遏制) the spread of the disease at Koway Court. ===================================================================================================
