Our love will never die
Among them were several Japanese and Korean fans who flew in to say goodbye despite the threat posed by the viral pneumonia outbreak. Those fans in Japan unable to make the trip took out an advertisement in a Chinese newspaper to say the world had become a poorer place with his passing. Cheung, 46, fell to his death from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. A note found in his pocket had only one word, depression. His death caused shockwaves in the entertainment industry and in an *unprecedented(無先例的) tribute(敬意,尊崇), Hong Kong's ``four kings'' of music - Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Leon Lai and Aaron Kwok - teamed together to sing one of his songs at the Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday. Yesterday's funeral at North Point Hong Kong Funeral Parlour(接待室) was for family and close friends only. It was closed(封閉的) to the public, but hundreds of fans still gathered outside, placing bouquets(花束,一束花[C]) of white flowers at the entrance. Many *wept(流(淚);哭泣) as the coffin(棺材,靈柩), covered with white flowers, was placed into the hearse( 靈車) for the drive to Cape Collinson where Cheung's body was cremated(將... Among those on the street was a male fan, surnamed Chan, who said Cheung's death had saddened (使悲傷;使難過) many people. "When I first heard the news, I thought it was a sick April Fool's Day joke,'' Chan said. ``It was several hours later that I realised he was *truly(確切地) gone. Even my mother, who lives in Canada, was saddened by the news. People of my generation grew up with his music and his films. Now there is nothing." One weeping woman said: "I still find it hard to accept that he has gone. He's been in the business for 20 years and it will be hard to forget him." In their advertisement, the Japanese fans said: "The world has become a darker place without you. Your departure has left us with pain, grief and emptiness. Maybe, someday, these emotions in our hearts will become lighter, but we will always miss you." The ad was signed "by your many, many Japanese fans". On Monday night, more than 5,000 fans braved the rain to say farewell at the funeral parlour. The wake(守靈[C]) was originally intended to last from 6pm to 8pm but with the queue of fans stretching(伸縮,延伸) for several hundred metres along Java Road, family members agreed to keep the doors open until nearly midnight. ===================================================================================================== *unprecedented (adj.) The rate of growth was unprecedented. [O]The little girl wept herself to sleep. I am truly grateful for all your help. He is now truly American. The desert stretches for thousands of miles. 伸直;伸出;伸長[(+out)] She stretched out her hand for the dictionary.
