Bets student jumps to death over debts
Members of his family were asleep at the time and only heard of the heartbreak(難忍的悲傷或失望;心碎) after firemen broke down the door to their Quarry Bay flat. The boy, surnamed Lo, was not staying with them at the time. He had apparently returned to their flat after midnight to write his farewell note before leaping(跳躍) out of the sitting room window. Lo, 20, was believed to have been heavily involved in illegal football gambling. He originally lived with his parents, elder sister and grandmother in Block B, Bo Fung Gardens, at 1092 King's Road. His father runs a medical equipment company. His sister said Lo had loved playing football as a child and enjoyed other sports. This may have affected his studies because he was forced to repeat Form Five three times. His gambling habits apparently forced him into petty crime and he was arrested on a couple of occasions for theft and robbery. In one such case last September, he was put on probation(緩刑) for one year. After stealing money from his family, Lo was told to live in another Quarry Bay flat that his father rented for him. He was also given living expenses. Two days before his death, Lo called his father and said he needed more money. His father, fearing his son would return to crime if he refused, agreed. However, the money apparently failed to meet his debts and, shortly after midnight while everyone else was asleep, Lo quietly returned to his parents' home where he wrote the note. He must have spent a long time sitting in the dark and considering his decision because it was only around 6am that he was found badly bleeding outside the block. He was taken to hospital but died shortly after admission. Firemen went to his family's apartment and, when no one answered the bell, they broke down the door. In a separate incident, a 30-year-old man jumped to his death from Tsuen Wan police station after being arrested for the possession of a banned drug. The man, surnamed Wong, had apparently spent at least an hour on the sixth floor of the station before deciding to jump. Wong was arrested by police on Monday. He was questioned before being released on bail at around 10pm. He went to the third floor to complete his bail(保釋) documentation and afterwards police thought incorrectly he had left the building. However, around midnight, Wong's body was found in the police car park in Castle Peak Road. ==================================================================================================== *Bookmaker 1. 著作者 2. 編輯人;出版者 3. 賭馬業者;馬票商人 *at the time 在那時He was very poor at that time. 他那時候很窮 on time 準時Will the train arrive on time? 火車會準時到達嗎? in time 及時 They were just in time for the bus. 他們及時趕上了公車。 |
