Stevie Nicks, singer, and inspiration to millions of girls around the world, I am sure.
Stevie Nicks
Has any woman ever brought more magic to the airwaves? Her song lyrics, fashions and interviews always intrigued me. As I grew older, I realized she represented a certain freedom that I yearned for, and tried to re-create in my art work.

Cher, singer, actress, and role model for overcoming the restrictions of stereotype.
Cher
This beautiful diva has inspired many people but her journey is especially interesting to me because she had humble roots, talent, and kept pushing to get what she wanted. When doors closed, she found others and opened them. I try to do that, too.

Influences on my Artwork

People and ideas that have influenced my art work include Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and the group nude photographs by Tunick.

Finding influences all around me.

When I consider what influenced my artistic style, my reflections lead more to a development-in-progress of a personal life philosophy which gets reflected in my work. Perhaps if I had studied for years under a specific teacher, my answer would be more conventional.

Inside, I was a free, open spirit who wanted to fly - but on the outside I was a little Mormon girl trying to do as I was told, to do what was right. Secretly, though, I kept my eyes and ears open for examples of people who seemed to be living life on their own terms, like I hoped to do some day.

My heroes are Katharine Hepburn, Stevie Nicks, Cher, Elizabeth Taylor and Sarah McLachlan. A more recent inspiration is Spencer Tunick, who photographs mass nudity as an artform.

How do I know what to draw?

I draw from my head most of the time. During my life, I have attempted to catalog as many images and impressions as possible into my brain. When a moment comes where I can draw, I call upon those files to help me with the details. The inspiration, though, comes from many sources.

Most amazing to me, though, is when The Muse overtakes me, compelling me to draw or create, without mercy, until She is through with me.

If you have ever experienced this, or heard of it, please let me know. I have not heard of it very often.

Women in my art work.

The women in my life as I was growing up were not free. They were restricted in their options - in everything from dress to activities - by their religious culture. As I grew older, I observed oppression of other kinds occurring all around me. I watched people struggle against the grain. I don't know how many succeeded, but they were inspirational to me. Just watching someone - anyone - struggle against the restricting confines of thought was an exception in my otherwise orderly world.

They are all my heroes.
