The gay community has been especially supportive of my art work and my success as an individual. In return, I love donating my time and talent in support of their fundraisers.

A brief autobiography of Kathie Dawn.

Childhood

I am the oldest of five children born to parents who are still together after 40 years. My father served in the U.S. Army and much of my childhood was spent moving from post to post. By the time I graduated high school at 17, we had lived coast to coast in the United States and spent three years in Karlsruhe, Germany. Living in Europe opened me up to many experiences and different worldviews.

Young Adulthood

My ultimate goal while growing up was to get married and have children. This is what my parents and my religion had taught me, and in my efforts to meet those expectations, I prepared myself for that. By the time I was 35 I had been married four times and, so far, unable to have children. I continued traveling while the rest of my family began settling in Arkansas. Eventually, I did, too. However, it seemed more and more clear that I was meant for a different path.

Career

When I was only 3-years-old, I sat down to a typewriter and began playing with the keys. That signaled the beginning of my preoccupation with typing, followed by word processors (anyone remember Wang?) and then computers. My job history has revolved around office administration in the medical, legal, nonprofit and other fields. As the internet revolution began, I jumped online. I have been a webmaster - or web space artist - for 10 years.

One highlight for me was a three-month stint during a special term of the Arkansas State Senate. Yes, I worked around Governor Bill Clinton. No, he never noticed me in that way.

Freedom

On August 3, 2000 I arrived in Seattle, Washington to begin a new chapter in my life. Sometimes I feel amazed that I have lived in this beautiful area for over three years. The first year was tough, as I found myself the proverbial "country mouse" trying to survive in the "big city." I count myself fortunate that I found friends who helped me survive and thrive, and a wonderful job that opened new vistas for me, as well.

I feel like I have found home. In the more conservative areas I have lived, for some reason I always stuck out like a sore thumb. Here, I am one of many with unconventional thoughts and expressions. For years I never shared my drawings with anyone. Now I feel free to do so... and look forward to your reactions and thoughts regarding my art.
