These are small to medium sized wading birds.  They have long and pointed wings and are strong fliers.  They eat things found by probing in the sand and mud. They nest on the ground.  I have seen the lapwings on our lawn and on the road at night! The sandpipers are usually on the beach.

The Redwattled Lapwing has a red beak shield and red patch next to each eye. It is brownish above and has a white underside as well as a white line running from the eyes along the neck and to its underparts. It is very territorial and circles beore landing.  It makes loud screeching noises while landing, and continues through the night.

The Spurwinged Lapwing is almost like the redwattled lapwing but it does not have the red patches.

The Redshank is the size of a partridge.  It is brownish above, has a brown streaked breast and is white below.  It has red legs. It breeds in the north (Kashmir) and is a winter visitor to the south.

The Wood Sandpiper is fairly common in mud-flats, marshes, and sand.  It is somewhat like a Redshank, but smaller.  This is a very common and friedly bird.  It can be found running along the beaches, wagging their tails, and digging into the mud and sand.
