1st TUYAN, MALPATAN CULTURE OF PEACE TRAINING
|
FIRST TUYAN, MALAPATAN CULTURE OF PEACE TRAINING (FTMCOPT)
December 6, 7, and 8, 2002
Sarah Beach Resort, Tuyan, Malapatan, Sarangani Province
To spread an awareness campaign and a culture of peace in the community-level, the barangay level plays a vital part, since it is regarded as the grassroots area and where the family, the basic unit of Filipino society resides. In this activity, members from KAAKBAY were tapped by the GOP-UN/MDP, ACT-SM Office to serve as facilitators/trainers only. This was the first time that KAAKBAY operated outside the confines of General Santos City. This activity was organized by the Sangguniang Kabataan Council of Tuyan, Malapatan, Sarangani Province, headed by now-KAAKBAY-Tuyan, Malapatan Chapter Chairman Charmaine Joyce R. Sali of the General Santos City High School (GSCHS).
It was a blessing in disguise for the participants, the organizers and the facilitators. Through this activity, the participants and organizers saw that trainings and symposia like this was far better and had a much more lasting impact than basketball leagues, particularly in the provincial areas where religious animosity and inter-tribal conflicts are experienced first-hand. To the facilitators, they had realized that, though the pool of potential trainors could usually be found in the urban areas, the promotion and the dissemination of the culture of peace was more relevant and can be more related-to by the people in the rural areas. The insights they had gained and the experience acquired increased their appreciation for their work. They hoped that such an experience would greatly improve their skills in promoting a culture of peace.
Thirty-two (32) youth leaders from this barangay attended. As before, these participants automatically became members of KAAKBAY, as per organizational policy.
