Chapter Four
The next morning, Josh knew he hadn't solved anything the previous day. He still had to call Mr. Ashford. Josh couldn't hesitate anymore. Mr. Ashford's phone rang four times before the answering machine message sounded. As soon as it beeped, Josh talked as fast as he could, hoping Mr. Ashford wasn't going to pick up the phone.
"Hi its Josh I'm having a bit of a run in with work because I was working on a story on policemen the other day instead of that review because they were really suspicious and they found out about me and they beat me up and now I don't know what to do okay? Bye."
Mr. Ashford listened to the message in his office. His right ankle sat upon his left knee. He stared at the answering machine, flabbergasted. Mr. Ashford played the message again. He listened this time, with his left ear close to the machine. "What?" he muttered. Mr. Ashford called Josh back.
"Hello?" Josh answered. He was sure it was Mr. Ashford, but he played dumb anyway.
"Josh," Mr. Ashford said.
"Who is this?"
"Your editor," Mr. Ashford said sarcastically.
"Hi, Mr. Ashford," Josh said with sanguinity.
"They beat you up?"
"Yes sir."
"You're lucky to be alive, son. You gonna have to watch your @$$."
If Mr. Ashford wasn't going to help Josh, and Piper was only going to give good sex, Josh would have to sort everything out on his own, like Moses told him in the first place.
Josh needed an agent, or an investigator, and so he called his district's ace investigator, Levon Wallace. Levon was a fair man, and coincidentally, he knew Mr. Ashford well. Moses was actually in a situation himself once, with Officer Raphael Deeds's team, FRAT. Moses just never had the "patience," as he claimed, to tell Josh.
After
much research, Levon found out where exactly the FRAT headquarters were. It
wasn't even in Edison. The officers must just have wanted to take advantage of
Edison's wealth. Levon also had one piece of advice for Moses and Josh. Josh was
not to have this story published. It was just too dangerous. Period.
When the three met to discuss this, Josh was less than
pleased. As he left the office, Moses saw an attitude of Josh's he had never
seen before.
"I'll publish it myself, if I have to copy it at Kinkos
and make copies on the street corner!" Josh hollered as he exited the
office and glanced at Levon and Moses.

This story was written by K8, and
some ideas may originally belong to David
J. Burke, the writer of Edison. Some of the story is K8's own work, BUT NOT
ALL OF IT. The writing is K8's except for a few quotes, but the concept is David
J. Burke's, except for a few scenes.
