Chapter Eight

Mr. Ashford kept things on the move. The day past Josh's newest accident, he called a district attorney, his close friend, Reigert. Josh was to meet with him the next day with Mr. Ashford and Moses.

By 8:35 on the morning of the meeting, Mr. Ashford, Mr. Wallace and Josh were walking down the streets of Edison, where their moods lacked tensity upon each other. They talked about the weather and cracked jokes. As they hailed a taxi and one pulled up to them, Levon entered it first. Josh said to Mr. Ashford, "What if we fail?"

With a slight laugh, Mr. Ashford said, "We're not going to fail, Josh. These men are stupider than a rat's @$$. We ain't going to fail."

Josh was dressed in business pants and a trench coat when he walked into Reigert's door with Mr. Ashford and Levon. Josh was hoping Mr. Ashford would step in front of him so he could introduce himself first, but he didn't. Josh stepped up to Reigert's desk and stuck out his hand. "Hi, I'm Josh Pollack."

Reigert took off his glasses and looked up at Joshua. Reigert had blue eyes and thick, luxurious, blonde hair. Reigert shook Josh's hand as he stood up. "Yes, hello, Mr. Pollack, Mr. Wallace, Moses."

Mr. Ashford nodded as he sat, and the four began conferencing.

Reigert took the trio into consideration and said he would file a lawsuit. The meeting was over by 9:30 am. Six months ago, Josh would have been in bed, and in trouble with himself for sleeping in on his Journalism class at SCU.

The next day, Reigert had called Josh to tell him that the police force had already filed a lawsuit against Josh, a bogus one. They complained that Josh had broken into their office to sell illegal drugs to them. Of course, the men "obliged."

"D@mnet!" Josh yelled as he slammed down the phone.

Reigert filed the lawsuit himself anyway.

For the next three months, Josh and Levon kept a low profile, working in Josh's apartment with Reigert and Moses.

Soon, the court date came. The men were dressed in suits and cleanly shaved. The courthouse was tall and large, most likely the one of the only wooden buildings in Edison. Josh entered before Moses, Levon, and Reigert. He swallowed the bit of saliva in his mouth and became alert. He could feel his face boil as he walked down the aisle. Those seated in the courtroom were staring at Josh's bruises on his face. Reigert was confident. Under his arm were hospital records and pictures. Moses walked like a father, who felt awkward, but acted confident. Levon was pleasant and friendly as always. As Josh stood behind the defendant's stand, he felt it was even risky to look behind him, just because he was so nervous, but he did anyway. Piper sat in the first row of seats. Josh insincerely smiled and turned back around. Reigert gave his evidence to the Bailiff and sat beside Levon, who was next to Josh.  As the judge entered, Josh's face turned a brighter red. He adjusted his neck tie. The Judge looked at the evidence, and called Deeds to the stand. He often stumbled over his words. He was not dressed in uniform, as the other policemen were not. The judge continued to imply that the men of FRAT were dimwits. Josh's palms began to dry, but he still bit his lip. He finally let go of his lips as the case was closed.
