About Hungary
The town is situated in the N-E part of Hungary, in a beautiful valley between the Bükk and Mátra mountains, about 80 miles (120 km) from the capital Budapest. Eger has a population of about 60 000, and being a relatively small town everything is within walking distance. The town is only about two hours ride by road or rail from Budapest.

General info In general all museums and exhibitions in Hungary are closed on Mondays. However the Casemates (Kazamata) in the Castle of Eger are open all year round.
The Castle itself is near the town centre and extends over an area of approx. 7 acres. You can easily spend your whole day in the Castle, there are plenty of stands, a souvenir shop and other amenities (wine-cellar, buffet, toilets)

Did you know?...

 ... That Bull's Blood (Egri Bikavér), probably the best known wine in Hungary comes from Eger!

Legend has it that during the ultimate battle in the 1552 siege by the Ottomans, the Castle defenders were given red wine to quench their thirst amidst the fight. As the wine trickled down the chins and beards leaving a red trail, the besiegers thought that the defending soldiers had drunk bull's blood, for they apparently picked up strength and fought even more valiantly to repel the onslaught.
