Learning Hope (Joia's Mom)
Helena - 1st picture
(Left) Only moments old, Helena is attached to heart and respiration monitors on Feb. 21.  As Josh chased after Helena to take these early pictures, Joia was still in surgery.  Joia would not see Helena for another 24 hours after these pictures.
Helena under the oxygen hood
(Right) Helena is now a few hours old and lies within an oxygen hood. This offers her air with a higher concentration of oxygen (30%) than room air (21%). It is similar in function to the oxygen mask paramedics use on adults. Helena remained under the oxygen hood for less than 2 days thanks to her strong lungs.
Josh & Helena - 3/23/02
Joia & Helena - 3/23/02
Once Helena was removed from the Oxygen hood when she was 2 days old, we were able to hold her for the first time. Here is Josh's first time holding Helena
Helena & NG Tube
Joia's first time holding Helena.  Because both Joia and Helena were hooked up to machines and couldn't be brought together, Joia didn't even get to see Helena until she was 1 day old and Joia was disconnected from her IV's. Helena was 2 days old when first held.
Helena -3/9/02
Taken March 9th, this pictures shows the feeding tube Helena had inserted through her nose on 2/24/02. She was fed thru the feeding tube until a week before her 3/25 release.
Proceed to Helena's homecoming pictures
In spite of her size, Helena has always been very responsive and alert.  She is shown here on 3/9/02 at 2 weeks old.
