Chapter One ::: Chocolate Cravings:::
Jack O'Neill lay on the hard bed. He snuggled into the warm sheepskin blankets, it was a cold night. The strong winds of the blizzard rattled the flimsy shutters. Jack tried to relax, he thought of all things beautiful and peaceful. He still couldn't sleep, so he threw off the covers and put on a long bearskin robe. He headed for Daniel's quarters.
He knocked on the heavily planked door that was Daniel's. Nothing. He began to pound it violently. Just as Jack was about to ram the door with his shoulder Daniel opened the door and he went running into Daniel's bed, stubbing his toe on the bed end. Jack hopped around the room with his toe in his hands until he sat down on the mattress. Daniel shut the door and sat next to Jack, who had put his toe in his mouth to try and sooth the pain.
"Jack, it's late, what do you want?" Daniel groaned.
Jack attempted to speak only to realise he had his foot in his mouth. He took the slobbery foot out and lay it respectfully on the floor.
"I couldn't sleep, I want some company," Jack said innocently.
"Awww poor Jack," Daniel pouted. "What ya want to talk about?" Daniel's eyes became shifty, "I do assume you want to talk,"
Jack was shocked. "Yes of course I want to talk,"
There was an uncomfortable silence. Jack cleared his throat, it seemed to be roaring through the room. "So, all these people and their art and stuff. It all looks very familiar,"
"Well I am not surprised. It is Viking, not only were they the original discoverers of America and raiders of the European lands after the Roman Empire fell. We have been to a planet with Viking people on it, Cimmeria. And the Asgard took on the persona of the main gods of the Vikings. The Asgard was actually the realm of which the Viking gods resided. Thor the god of thunder, and protector man (who we've met before, Son of Odin, the king of the gods, who resided in the hall of Valhalla.
We haven?t met Odin yet, but we?ve got references of him on the sphere on PSC ? 3539. Sleipnir was his horse, he had eight legs and was said to be the fastest of all horses and could run over earth, sea and air. Most probably Sleipnir was an Asgard ship.
There was also Frey'r The god of fertility and weather. We've met him before. Heimdall, the creator of the three races of mankind: The serfs, the peasants and the Warriors. Loki the god of mischief, I sure hope we don't meet him anytime soon. Tyr, was the god of war. The Vikings believed that all the realms including Midgard (Earth) were sheltered in the roots of the World Tree: Yggdrasil. And on the day of Ragnarok (the apocalypse) the Fire Giant Surt would set fire to Yggdrasil?"
Jack waved his finger under Daniel?s nose.
"Danny boy! Ya know how I feel about mythology! Stop it! Tell me about the great leaders who obviously modeled themselves after me," Jack said proudly.
Daniel rolled his eyes.
"I don't know if there were any that stupid, but there were many leaders. Most of them were chieftains or Earls or Kings, the most high ranking Viking people. But not all of the Vikings were raiders. Some were farmers looking for new pastures. They used their long ships to travel from their home in Scandinavia, to places like Ireland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, Canada and France. The land of Normandy in France was given to one of the leaders Rollo in nineteen eleven AD.
But, one of my personal favorite Vikings was Bjarni Herljolfsson who, when blown off coarse by a vicious storm, saw the coast of North America. He went back to Greenland to tell people all about it. Later Leif Ericsson looked for the 'Vinland'. The Vikings made small settlements in Newfoundland, Canada and Maine USA, around 1003 AD.
Many other Vikings traveled as far as Turkey, Russia and China, most of them were traders and-" Daniel was cut off.
"Daniel?" Jack said in a quiet sleepy voice. "Did Vikings REALLY have silly hats with horns?"
"No they didn't that's just a myth," he replied.
"Ah good," Jack muttered and drifted off into a deep sleep on Daniel's shoulder.
"I bet you didn't listen to a word I said just now," Daniel sighed. He lightly shifted Jack from his shoulder onto the bed and covered him up with a blanket. He left the room and went to sleep in Jacks quarters.
