Astronomy
Designed and built a unique split-ring telescope in 1985. This design was published in Sky & Telescope magazine (March 1986) and Telescope Making magazine (TM28). Following this publication, managed correspondence with hundreds of people across the globe sending blueprints of telescope design to interested astronomers. Over 19 years later, still receives inquiries and has published telescope plans to the Internet. During this time, became vice-president of the Oklahoma City Astronomy Club. Planned, scheduled, coordinated and supervised the national Okie-Tex star party and Texas star party. These gatherings bring amateur astronomers from all over the USA and other countries together for a week of dark-sky observing and daylight seminars. Was also one of the founders of the Okie-Tex star party.

Girl Scouts
Was handed a manilla envelope of Girl Scouting books following a complaint that his daughter couldn't find a 2nd grade troop. In the years that followed, became one of the only male Girl Scout leaders in the state of Oklahoma. At one point, was the leader of 4 troops with a total membership of close to 100 girls. Also became a leading council trainer and camp planner acting as volunteer council training director (normally a staff position) for a year. Developed curriculum for women's issues, songs & games and camp technologies. Assumed the position of Service Unit director (city-wide manager) and presided over the first 100% recruited membership placement effort in council history.

Lead troops in regularly scheduled community services and upgraded council campgrounds with multiple service projects. The troops also contributed to improvements at state parks and wildlife refuges, frequently traveling the state and camping on site. Troops pioneered low-impact camping techniques that were trained and used in multiple state councils.

Church
Has always been active in church, even helping to start a congregation in an unserved area of central Oklahoma. Continues to be an active participant in church operation and leadership.
